So what exactly is different between the autofocus settings "normal" and "close-up"? They both take the same photos it appears.

Yes, I noticed the option, too. I took the close-up option as like the macro setting on regular cameras. In simple terms, this helps the camera to optimize it's focus when taking a photo around 1-2 ft. from the object your taking the picture of. Not much of a big deal, but just nice to know it's there.
