This problem ONLY happens when the phone itself is positioned differently than the norm talking position. At normal posture I can talk on the phone without problems, as soon as I lay down to talk on the phone it turns into the complaint that I'm "MUFFLED". So it seems that when the ear piece is pointed towards the ground and the microphone is pointed towards the ceiling, the phone doesn't want to transmit a clear voice!

Does this ring a bell for anyone?! Any resolution or basically get it replaced?

yes, that is what happens with mine. how did you come to this conclusion? i dont think getting the device replaced matters. this is my 3rd storm, and i still have the same issue. i think it is a software issue---if i leave myself a voice note using the voice recorder, it sounds perfectly clear. it is only during calls. so i know it's not the microphone.

I had similar sound issues including calls dropping frequently.
Two things helped resolve the issue.
    1. went into network settings and switched from 3G & 2G to just 2G
    2. in phone, went to options, general options, Enhance Handset Call Audio and set it to Boost Treble.
    No more issues after this

Oddly, when I hold the phone in my left hand the sound is muffled. When I hold it in my right hand, it is clear. I have been told this by someone I speak to regularly by phone. I have tried adjusting my hand while holding the phone but it doesn't seem to help. More fuel for the fire!

Normally. I'm a lurker, but when I saw that someone ELSE experienced the muffled issue when talking with the phone in their left hand......

I turn the phone so that the mike is closer to my mouth....all done. But when I hold it at the same angle left handed as right handed, it sounds muffled. I experimented leaving myself voice mails, and could replicate the issues everytime.

Bingo! Your right hand is your new best friend. The storm is not the only berry to be affected by this. 72xx's, 87xx's, etc.

I guess you have to chalk it up to another lame defect on this "smart phone"

Notice where the mic is. When holding it left handed, the mic is pointed down toward your shoulder and into bottom of palm. (more muffled) When in right hand, it's pointed toward ceiling. So when using left handed tilt phone more horizontally toward your mouth.

i had the same issue with .109, .122, and .141. I used Lyr's Swap-A-radio and put it back to .113, which seems to work the best for me IRT to radio signal, stability and call quality. Since doing that, no issues. Might want to give it a shot and see if it works for you too.

The problem is the noise canceling software in the phone. This was confirmed to me by verizon.
I've been complaining about this since the beginning.

Send an email to RIM [email protected] if you have this problem.

It has a noise cancellation feature (filter out background noise so they could hear your voice better) its a technology adopted from bluetooth headphones. The problem is when your in a quiet room the phone "thinks" your voice is the background so it filters (make you sound muffled) out your own voice.

its a great feature, but they need to give us a way to turn it on and off.

Try this test when you are talking on the phone and someone is complaining about your voice sounding muffled, quickly put the phone into speaker and ask if you sound better. The reason for that is the phone is into speaker mode the noise cancellation it turned off.

Mine is also muffled on most calls. I usually just text/email now because people were complaining so much (still on .75). When it came time for me to say something, I would pull the phone from the side of my head to talk into the mic like a CB radio. It looked like I had a problem.

so the noise cancellation is independant of the enhanced audio (which you can turn on and off) ?

I noticed this only happens when you press the phone too hard against your face. There's something on top that resembles a mic but I think its for the holster clip but I find if I cover that, ill get the muffles sound. Mainly when I try to hold the to my face with my shoulder.

A good way to test the sound quality is call your voicemail and re record your personal message. Listen to it. You will hear what you sound like over your phone.

Keep your mouth away from the handset.

The mic and noise cancellation are sensitive.

I haven't read every reply to this posting but i am curious to know if most of you have been using bb's for a while. I had a Pearl, Curve, and now storm so i have been using the DM for my swich from ea of them. I believe the muffled problem is from a bug that comes with the swich. About 10 or so days ago i backed up my phones contact list and calendar to windows microsoft outlook. I dont usually use this program but it worked very good. then i wrote down my password keeper's info(pain in the A*^) then all my bb messenger contacts and finally backed up my 3rd party apps on my phone to the desktop. Wiped my phone out w/ JL Comander, loaded the newest software available at the time 1 of a kinds hybrid 5.9 or something i believe. I did not use the desktop manager for anything. Oh by the way i removed the DM from my PC (uninstall) and then went and deleted all the RIM files in the program file. I reinstalled it to do all of this like a Virgin BB user. Only used dm to load 3rd party apps. Used the Installer to load the OS. I have not had any issues w/ the calls yet. This is alot of freaking work if you are not used to it but damn if i didnt' swich out my phone 3 times and have the same problem ea time. Use the DM to sync w/ outlook for your contacts and calendar, load the 3rd party apps and start from scratch there. Meaning you have to ask all the bb messengers for permission, load your curse words to the custom dic, and all your slang for your custom text. I'm now on a shrunk version of the Mex 151 no hybrid and i started w/ 46 mb 8 days ago and still have 32 mb on it. My batt sucks a bit but i have a car charger and a data cable. If this helps any of you then I'm glad I could offer it up.
