Yes 'application free space' and file free are the same.
device memory refers to the flash memory built in to your device which can be used to store, musica, video, etc.

Application Memory is only for apps that you use on your device.
Device Memory is the 1GB onboard memory that you can use for anything other than apps. I use this to store my rings, walls, and contact pix.
Media Card is the 8GB external memory that most folks use for music and videos and such.
