I can't ever do a regular backup. However, I find that if I do an Advanced Backup, clear the browser cache, and then just select the whole list, it will back up and then I just have to remember to click the save button. Occasionally one or another on the list will fail and I just backup everything again, minus whatever failed. Works for me.
The way to fix that error is to go to your Storm BB Browser options and delete the cache. This will fix the issue of backing up with desktop manager. Hope that helps anyone that was asking earlier.
Just an FYI, clearing my Browser cache did not fix the backup error, I was able to track the problem down to a bookmark that wasn't working, and had to be deleted. Backup worked ok after that, just figured I would pass this along in case this could help others.

easiest way to fix it, well to get around it, is to go in the advance options in the DM and click exactly what you want to back up...
.. so just select everyhting EXCEPT.. Browser Data Cache
-- it will work perfectly
-- once it is done, just save the file where you normally would save the back up file
OMG....I love you guys/ladies! All my backups always worked fine until Vista. Now the error comes into play. Cleared the browser cache as suggested....walla! Backup worked! SIGH of relief...cuz I so did not want to wipe my phone.... :O

Oh yea...I did the "NO" on mass storage mode as suggested, also.
AND for the record...I'm NOT a CrackBerry "newbie"!! Their site just seemed to have lost my logon info. ??????????
Maybe you CB'rs smarter than I (which should be just about everyone) can help me with why I can't backup my 9530.
I've cleared the cache, tried changing the options to include everything, laptop restart and battery pull, NO on mass storage mode, and every time I attempt to back it up, it stops at SMART CARD OPTIONS and gives me the backup error. I've backed my 9530 up twice in the 7 weeks I've had it, and want to start doing it weekly, but can't get past this problem.
