As the subject says I'd like to know what type of usage I'm uses up? I'd like to use my aim and msn on my storm but I do not have a unlimited text plan so I am hoping the answer is data.

I don't use either, but I do use BB Messenger and it uses data, not text. I believe AIM and MSN are the same.

No worries. They are charged as data.

All of the IM clients that come standard with the Storm (BBM, GTalk, AIM, Yahoo, MSN) use data.

For other 3rd party ones, you have to check them individually, probably from the website where you downloaded them. Typically only the older clients still use SMS, most now use data.
