I have not seen this come up but does anyone update their phones with verizon. I mean with dialing #228 (I believe this is the right number). You can update roaming and programing. I use to do this with my other non-blackberry phones. Should I be doing this with my Storm? Thanks for the help.

It's just like any other Verizon phone. It's perfectly fine and safe to do so with a Storm.

you should be doing this with anyone of your verizon phones. Esp if you go to a different part of your region....ex i live in jersey so when i go to upstate NY or when i go to FL i always update it because it finds the towers that are close to me. helps save battery power too from the limited roaming

Thanks for the reply. Should do both programing and roaming or just roaming?

You don't need to do the programming. Roaming is just fine.

VZW recommends programming & PRL update. Dial *22899 (see JRSCCivic98/Howarmat) monthly & for signal issue(s) unresolved by switching off/on connections or battery pull.

*228 (Option 2) updates the PRL in the handset. It is my understanding that this basically tells your phone whether or not to show the roaming indicator. I wouldn't think that would significantly impavt battery life.

Actually with the recent changes to Alltel/VZW towers that have been going on, sometimes (in some areas) the Home SID has changed for people. This change can only be pushed to the phone if you do a full provisioning update (i.e. *228 opt1 or *22899).

So, make it easy on yourself and just dial *22899 and be done with it... no need to wait for prompts or dial anything else.

Does dialing *22899 change anything on the phone like apps, set up, data, etc.? The word "reprogramming" scares me !

No, it has nothing to do with any of that. It's simply has to do with the phone part of your blackberry. As mentioned all Verizon phones should do this from time to time.

There is nothing to fear but fear itself! No worries go ahead and do the programming.

Does this work for all service providers?
No, only CDMA ones that have this OTA system in place. Some do and some don't.
