Never had this problem before, then today I noticed my browser icon was in my app switcher. Went to browser hit & held return button, browser icon still in app switcher. Went to browser, did the menu-close, browser icon still in app switcher. Pulled battery, still on. Any clues?

you;re not nuts, the browser always stays resident in memory, even if you close it, so it will always appear in the app switcher.

There are 5 applications that are always running Messages, Browser, Home, PHone and Blackberry Messenger. This is normal
