You have to use the "compose mms" function from the blackberry menu button. If there is a particular picture you have saved on your phone, highlight that pic, hit the blackberry button to bring up the menu and click "Send as MMS". There is also a icon at the bottom of the pictures folder in the thumbnail view with a "Send As" function if you hold (hover) your finger over it.
SMS is small message service and MMS is media message service.....
this means that SMS can ONLY send text messages and MMS can send text and media messages. also keep in mind that there is no way to get around the 160 character limit for a SMS because that is network controlled.
