I'm new to making themes, but I wanted to give it a shot. I decided to go with a Windows Mobile inspired theme. Here is my first release.
The "Start" button is set to launch the app in the 2nd position and is intended for QuickLaunch (which I don't have at the moment because I can't afford it... no, not even $4.99 ...but I found a demo for version 1.3 that seems to be working in the simulator). The 1st position app will appear as the only icon on screen (intended for WeatherBug or BerryWeather or whatever weather app you have).
The "Browser" and "Options" buttons are fixed, unless I can figure out a way for just an apps title to appear and not the icon.
Pressing in between the Start button and the time will bring up Messages. Pressing the clock will bring up the Clock app. And pressing in the empty area to the left of the WeatherBug icon will bring up the App List (see touch chart image).
Icons are Windows 7 (some modified) and a few custom made.
I'm releasing this in 2 versions. And thanks to ejackson, theses are available OTA.
Here is a link to a Windows 7 icon pack that I have used for my themes. They all need to be resized to the 73x73 size used in most of the theme. Since you are on a tight budget get Gimp or Paint.net to work on your icons (both are free). I use Paint.net but many people use Gimp.
Thanks jaxjon for the link to the icons... I've been looking for something similar all day. They'll definitely work. I'll probably try modifying some of them (and maybe all of them eventually), but I they'll definitely do for now.
I'll probably put up what I have done sometime in the next couple days so everyone who's interested can try it out.
The windows orb is just part of the background, but having WeatherBug sit on top of it has been kinda bothering me, too. So, I'll probably end up either flipping the background image, or moving WeatherBug to the opposite side of the screen... I'll probably just move the icon.
Ok I see what's happening now. I'm starting to only use themes with a QL shortcut imbedded. This one would really be nice to have. Would the start button launch QL no matter what or would it depend on icon placement in the app menu?
I have no idea if it'd be possible to make it dedicated to QuickLaunch. I'm not overly familiar with Plazmic (I'm more or less learning as I go). However, it seems like have a button dedicated to a program that wasn't on everyone's Storm would cause issues (at the very least it would limit the number of people who could use the theme).

I never understood why quicklaunch would need a designated spot. Isn't it easier to just assign a soft key? imho, I think something like a quicklaunch designated spot would take away from a theme.

i can barely press the convenience keys on the side of my storm while holding it, its much easier to just tap the screen, imo....
wow that sounded really american...."cant...press....button....on side of phone!...too....much....wrist rotation!"
Well, I thought I'd be ready to upload this thing by now, but I seem to have run into an issue. It appears I have a pretty heavy memory leak (dropped from 40.47mb to 25.05mb in 8 hours while I slept). Normally, I don't drop below 34ish mb.
I had it on my phone, however, there appeared to be a massive memory leak... and I'm not sure what caused it. At least that's what I thought, I switch back to the theme I was using before (which I know works well), and I still seemed to have the memory leak.
Can a theme cause a leak simply by being on the phone and not in use? I also noticed that when I used the desktop manager to install my theme it also intalled VCast Rhapsody (or whatever it's called), so maybe that was causing the problem.
What's the best way to get a theme on the phone that doesn't basically redo the entire phone? (which is what desktop manager seemed to do). I tried to make a .jad, but all I got was a very small .jad file along with about a dozen or so .cod files. I wasn't sure what to do with them.
One other issue I had was significant "ghosting" on the home screen. By that I mean that you can see an after image of the previous screen when switching back to the home screen. Any idea what the cause of this might be?
