Deletes OS off handheld and gives you a clean slate. I did it when I went back to the .114 OS.

No you don't have to if you don't want to. Some people do it every time and others do it every couple of upgrades.

Yes you can upgrade right over the OS you have on your phone now. Think of JL as a reformat of a PC, wipes away everything and gives you a fresh start.
