I recently switched to a Q5 from a Blackberry Torch. The Torch was my absolute favorite phone I've ever had and I had originally planned on sticking with it until the new BB10 slider came out this year.

However, T-mobile did some sort of network update mid-July and after that my Torch wasn't able to get 4G. Everything else worked, but as I was going out of town and would need to work off my hotspot, I decided to get a Q5 as an interim phone because working off an internet connection on the edge network would be miserable.

Before I bought the Q5, I read posts and I called T-mobile (45 minutes and 4 transfers) to make sure there wasn't an issue with that model and their network and the number 1 question I had was if I could get calls over wifi on their network with that phone. I get horrible reception for Tmo networks at home, but since the Torch had wifi calling it wasn't an issue.

The Blackberry specialist told me that, yes, it would work on it . . . I'm sure you know what comes next . . . it doesn't.

So now I have a phone with no option for calls over wifi on a network I can't get reception on half the time.

I'm on a prepaid plan. They were pushing me on the phone and when I went into the Tmo store to switch to post paid. At the time I didn't just because the post paid plans I had before on other networks had obscene amounts of taxes and fees added on to the service. After this experience, I will never lock myself into a contract with a carrier again.

I'm leaning to switching to Cricket's prepaid plan since they are on the AT&T network.

    * Calls over wifi: It doesn't sound like this is going to be an option on either Tmo or ATT/Cricket

    * Mobile Hotspot: This works on Tmo. From reading some of the forum threads, it sounds like Cricket doesn't allow this? Is this true?

    * Visual Voicemail: This works on Tmo. Does Cricket have this?

    * Group Messaging: On my Torch on Tmo I could send group messages, but if someone replied it would come to me only and if I replied it would only go to the sender, which was kind of a bummer. On the Q5 on Tmo after the update to 10.3.2, I can now send, receive, and participate in group mms messages, which is awesome. Is this carrier specific and will it still work on Cricket?

What plan are you currently on with T-Mobile? They are currently running a promotion that you get two lines of unlimited data for 100.

The only phones that have wifi calling on TMo are the Z10 and Q10.
