Is it simply a run of the mill magnet (of a certain strength perhaps) or is there some other 'magic ' to it ? I ask because I bought a flip case for my Q but when the cover is closed it doesn't put the phone to sleep - the screen stays lit until it times out. I want to McGyver into this new case something that will cause the phone to go into sleep mode when the cover is closed.

it's a magnet and need to be located at the right place, and all BB device have a different magnet position, my old 8900 was on top left, my 9800 and 9810 was on the top right corner, my q10 seem to be in the middle of the phone (so my old 8900 and my old 9810 holster wont work with this phone)

It's some form of earth magnet, not a standard one. I know a few third party cases use the same magnet to do Sleep Mode.

Where would someone acquire such a magnet ? Can't just use the flat magnets that people use to stick stuff up on a fridge - you know the real estate card type things that agents give out ?

Part of the screen has to be close enough to the magnet to trigger the magnetic screen lock. You also have to have lock when holstered enabled in your lock screen settings.

I think any magnet from any cellphone case will work.

Ensure you have the holster profile in settings set correctly.
The refrigerator magnets work but they must have some heft to them.
The square light business card type advertisement style magnets I couldn't get to work.
It's usually the thicker magnets that trigger sleep mode.

I wouldn't put any magney close to the screen. The phone is placed in the holster with screen facing you. The magnet is trigger from the rear.

I have a q10 with "oem case and holster" the phone goes in the holster face in, to protect the screen. There is a magnet against the screen but seperated by a microfiber material. I checked with my phone using a frigrator magnet holding it close to the screen. The sweet spot is just above the "R". You can watch the screen go blank as you do it. The phone will do this with default settings. You can set it to lock the device when holstered if you use a password. While I used a refrigerator magnet for my test, the magnet in the case is stronger

I have never placed a phone in a pouch face in. Never damaged a screen or phone with a magnet either. My current case is a horizontal pouch. The phone fit into the case fine, but with my hard/soft shell combo, the pouch wouldn't close right because the magnets in the flap were not close enough to the other magnets. So what I did was cut two magnets out of another phone case that I was no longer using, and I superglued them to the outside of the pouch where they could line up with the closure part of the case. The case closes fine, and my phone stays in it securely. I also have my phone set to lock when holstered, and it does lock when I put it in the pouch, screen facing away from my body and toward the magnet. Every BlackBerry I have ever owned has locked while holstered with the screen facing out, as long as the belt pouch I was using had a magnetic closure.

Hey mfreedmn97. I have used rare earth magnets at my job. They are very strong and can be very small. You might be able to fit one in the flip cover. Check out kjmagnetics. They have some disc magnets 1/32" thick with 0.25lb pull.
