I need a new (to me) used phone and I think the Q10 is the one for me. What potential issues should I be looking for? Is there a way to test for the double typing issue? Thanks in advance.

You get what you pay for.
I wouldn't watch out for the first versions of the Q10. Rather from 2014! You can test it of course right in front of the buyer. Pull out the app "Remember" and hit "new note". There you type a long text and see for yourself.
Otherwise I would consult you to look one with a warranty. Especially when it comes to such devices. if want to have fun in the long term, look for a Q10 with a warranty. Otherwise take a risk and see for a used one in an excellent condition. Check out the battery. It if it's not good, you can order one at Amazon.
Other than that, it is a great device. Even in 2015. Especially when 10.3.1. comes out in February. Enjoy!
Try to remove and install the battery...sometimes nearly broken BlackBerry can't complete the loading ( need several times to do it)..

Blackberry Passport running 10.3.1.1151
I am in the States. That sounds like a good deal though. There is one on Craigslist for $125. Condition looks good in the pics.
Thanks for the tip. I will definitely try that when checking out a used Q10.
Spare parts are cheap by the way. If you accidentally end up with a faulty keyboard you'll have a replacement for around 7 dollars.
I just bought myself a heavily scratched and banged Q with faulty keyboard and broken screen for 40 bucks. Ordered 35 dollars in spare parts and it will be shiny new again after an hour of tinkering...

BlackBerry has a fantastic software pre-installed; BBVE (Blackberry Virtual Expert). With help BBVE you can test every necessary function. If test results are OK, the next step is using your eyes. If you look and like it, you allright to go and buy it. I did the exact same.
I just purchased a used Q10 last month. Mine was only used a few hours according to the eBay seller and included the original box, screen protector and official BBRY leather holster all for $150 including shipping.
My advice is to be patient and look on eBay. They have buyer (and seller) protection, so you won't have to worry if you get a lemon.
Also, I look for things like original packaging/accessories. In my experience this is usually an indication that the owner takes good care of their things or that the phone is largely unused.
Play something through the speaker at a loud volume and make sure it doesn't distort
