I was planning on unlocking my device so I could buy/use foreign SIM cards when traveling, but it looks like the Q10 uses a mini SIM, so what good is that? Or am I wrong and the SIM is the same size as the old SIMs, or are these mini SIMs just as prevalent internationally as the old SIMs?

It's called. Micro SIM and they are the new standard. It's the same one used in the latest iphones and androids. You shouldn't have any problem finding them around the world.

SIM - analog phones, credit card sized.
Mini SIM - the one we all know and used up till around 2011
Micro SIM - the mini-SIM contact arrangement in a cut down envelope, as used in many recent phones. Many shops can convert mini-SIM to micro-SIM
Nano SIM - as used by iPhone 5. Not, I believe, contact compatible (I wonder why?)

Micro SIM can be used with care in a mini-SIM phone with an adaptor.

An adapter might break the SIM tray, I wouldn't use one, just line up the contacts and use a bit of tape.

The Nano SIM can be used with adapter, safely, in a BB10 device. See this article: How to install a Micro SIM card or iPhone 5 Nano SIM card into the BlackBerry Z10 | CrackBerry.com
I haven't done so myself, but a co-worker who had a fleeting relationship with an iPhone 5 followed these instructions. She's currently using the Nano SIM in her Q10.

I've used an adapter but there are some risk involved if your not careful. I would try it without an adapter but then again there maybe a risk but lesser than trying to use an adapter

Maybe in a BB10 but it broke the SIM tray on my 9900 and that was expensive to replace. You don't need the adapter, just line it up, that is a safer method.

Just get one of these and cut the mini sim. Just last week I cut a 2-3 year old sim (the ones with the slightly bigger gold contact area), and it worked perfectly.
