I guess a lot of us Q10 users have noticed there is no keyboard shortcut for starting a new line in BBM or SMS. The "Enter" key send the current message. I did a quick search and found a thread about a workaround using word substitution (see below the link), i.e. automatically substitute, say, '**' with spaces all the way to end of the 'New Phrase'. The word substitution idea is generally clever whilst the 'space all the way...' is bad, especially when you want to delete the new line, you have to delete a lot of spaces to go back to where you insert the new line. Although you cannot use ↵ to start a new line in BBM or SMS you can do so for adding an new entry to the word substitution list. I use \n to insert a new line. see the screen shots.

What happened to shift+enter/return? That doesn't work anymore?

Another indication that the Q10/BB10 isn't for me. Too many features are still missing. Hey I hear that the new iPhone 6 is taking a play right from BBRY's book and is not including the ability to copy and paste. They said privately that they wont let anyone know that previous features and functionality won't be included on the new phone and that they'll wait until users start to complain. Breaking news: Samsung will forego having a media player too.

Press ALT then SHIFT and then ENTER to go to the next line.

Press ALT again to start typing normally

If I am off the point, my apology, but on 9900 (I sold my Q10 so I do not know how it works on this one), Message>Options and you will find "Press Enter key to Send", and it's checked as default. Uncheck this to use the Enter key as a return carriage.
Q10 does not have this option?

Cooboo's work around noted above works. I've been using a variation if this myself.

Alt + return starts a new line on the Q10...try it out.

You have to hold down the alt key till "ALT" is blue in the top right corner.

Yes, well done. Otherwise alt+return switches input language.

People complaining about this are probably the same people who whine when the line up at Starbucks is too long. I'm getting lots done with my Q10 sans the ability to enter a new line in SMS.

Whoa, a new line, not in SMS, thanks team!

Another one. Hmmm. Entering a new line in SMS is all the naysaying can come up with? Wow. Okay.

To add a new line - found by accident

Hold alt till it becomes ALT in a Blue Box, or keep ALT pressed for 2 seconds

    Press the return/enter key

And there you have it, line break solved

So I got a free Q10. Certainly would not have paid for this device as my 9900 is much more efficient than this "upgrade" but I found that while composing a text message, if you press and hold right shift + the return key, it will create a new line.
