Speed dial option on the Q10

So i just got the phone of my dreams and I'm on the learning curve. I need help on the speed dial option i read the manual went to call, press settings pressed speed dial, assigned contacts to the letters on my keyboard but when i try to use them it goes straight to search mode. How do I fix this?

Is there no mode similar to OS7 and earlier where you can disable the search mode and speed dial from the main screen?

Btw, are there no shortcut keys on the Q10 keyboard (K=lock, U= calculator) as well?
