    I sure hope the next BB Qwerty has a taller screen than this. It's so frustrating to look at, they could have made the phone a tiny bit taller and fit another row of icons in. The trend is for bigger screens and here is BlackBerry releasing a smartphone with one of the smallest screens on the market.

    This is a nonsensical comment when that trend applies to non-qwerty phones, there is no trend relating to qwerty screensize because nobody else makes one worth mentioning.

    how does this size q10 compare to z10?
    are there going to be sliders like 9810 with touch and querty.

    does q10 have touch screen like 9810 because that makes it smaller when using touch screen

    Take a look at the first posting here, gabedabomb has added the Z10 to the diagram. Basicly it is 4.2" vs. 3.1", Q10 being a tad wider, while the Z10 is quite a bit taller.
    There are no sliders announced (yet), nobody really know whether we'll get them or not. If at all, it most likely won't be this year.

    Yes, the Q10 of course has a touch screen. Have you ever searched anything about this device? There are a couple of hands-on videos here on Crackberry, also here in the Q10 forums there are various posts with other videos posted.

    Ah, I see. At least none of the currently available videos show a virtual keyboard. I also highly doubt it will have one. How should it work? The original screen size is already limited by the physical QWERTY, then you'll get that virtual keyboard above the physical keys which leaves us with one row of text. Somehow this really wouldn't make sense.
    The physical QWERTY however is touch supported, which means you have word suggestions on the bottom of the screen, where you can just touch the words to select them.

    Since I'm all about pixel count just as much as screen size, I quickly drew this up as an added comparison. You can see that the previous BB phones sure weren't much to brag about as far as screen resolution goes.

    EDIT: A few people may be confused with actual size vs resolution, two different things. This is a screen resolution diagram and is to scale for that only, and is not the same scale comparison as screen size, posted earlier. In my opinion, resolution is more important than size alone, simply because if you have good eyesight (or good bifocals) you can see the same amount of detail as on a bigger screen with the same resolution. I have been surprised at the lack of knowledge in this area, just looking at the low res laptops for sale at Staples tells you how little people are aware of resolution. That is changing slowly however.

    It is a compromise. You have a great keyboard but you just can't look as far down a web page as you would like or see as many messages at one time. If you want to play games the compromise is too much. If you watch a lot of video the Z10 would be better. If you are basically satisfied with your current BB and do not feel you are missing much .. the Q10 is an upgrade.

    I think the width here is wrong ? They have widen the keyboard keys on the Q10 to be the same size, which should make the Q10 phone a little wider than the bold 9900. Right ?

    The Q10 is 66,8mm wide, while the 9900 would be 66mm wide. The keys also seem taller. Keep in mind they only increased the size of the keys by roughly 3%, however all of them share the same size now - except the special keys.

    So with BB9900 in hand , I compared my experience in looking up one of my favourite sites on 9900 with the Z10. I have not changed my opinion that the length of the screen is less important than the width. I could read the site just as well on my BB9900. Again I tried the virtual keyboard and I am not sure that I will ever type accurately on it. So far it is the Q10 for me ... but no rush.

    Edited with a more precise diagram:
    -----------------------------------------------
    Using a little Pythagorean Theorem, I came up with the attached diagram. I am considering going from a Torch 9810 to a Q10, hence the example.

    Rough dimensions:
    9810 - 1.88" x 2.5" (3.2" diagnal) = 4.69 sq in
    9900 - 2.24" x 1.68" (2.8" diagnal) = 3.76 sq in
    Q10 - 2.19" x 2.19" (3.1" diagnal) = 4.80 sq in

    If my math is right, the Q10's screen width is just a hair narrower than the 9900, but is 0.5" taller...basically real estate from the row of buttons. Coming from the 9810, I'd gain about 0.3" width, and lose 0.3" in height. However, my screen real estate would actualy increase by a tad. Not bad

    Attachment 134223
    Your Z10 height is wrong, should be 3.6" in height. sqrt(3.36^2 + 2.16^2) is approx. 4" not 4.2".

    You can calculate the width and height of a phone (or any screen) as follows:

    Let d = diagonal length
    Let p = height_in_pixels / width_in_pixels

    p provides information about the screen's aspect ratio. d is the screen length across the diagonal.

    Then:
    width = d * cos(arctan(p))
    height = d * sin(arctan(p))

    So for the Z10 we have that :

    d = 4.2
    p = 1280 / 768 = 1.67 (rounded)

    Then :
    width = 4.2 * cos(arctan(1.67)) = (approx.) 2.16
    height = 4.2 * sin(arctan(1.67)) = (approx.) 3.6

    You can confirm that sqrt(3.6^2 + 2.16^2) = approximately 4.2

    Cheers

    I just used an old iPod touch for reference. It's roughly 2" x 3" (diagonal 3.5") Given the square proportions of the Q10 it seems that screen size will be quite adequate for my needs. I have little interest in apps or video content.

    Man, looking at that makes me wish they went a little taller and matched the Torches height. At 2.5"x2.2" they could've added an extra row of icons and less scrolling.
    They should have simply made it a 4:3 with 720*960 resolution.

    me personally I like having a wider screen as we always scroll up and down...its naturally how content is displayed and created. So the q10s screen will be more usable than people will initially think... Its also why so many people could care less that the iphone 5 just got taller....

    Any chance of posting the diagram of the Q10 screen over the 9810 screen, as a lot of users are migrating from 9810's. It appears that the width is quite a bit biger and the length is only slightly smaller than the 9810 which is awesome--as most will agree that the screen on the 9810s are a great size for doing everything from emails to browsing the web. It would be much appreciated. Thanks!

    Thanks so much for this. I am going from the 9800, and really really like the keyboard although I thought about jumping
    to the Z10 I was wondering if I stayed with the Q10 how much would I really be losing/gaining. Overall it seems gain/lose
    not by much.

    My thought would be to have Torch as secondary pre-paid and have the Z10, but as much as I've tried not sure
    that I could get use to touch only...and recently seeing all the shortcuts on the Q10...but also wondering what
    it would be like to have all that Z10 real estate...hmm

    I guess I'd say I'm more of a communicator using my phone for text or email, than for much anything
    else...here and there a game and apps no so much. But with BBM etc looking forward to testing out.

    With all the things surrounding...I might be moving to the Q10. We shall see in a week or two, finally!
    It will my bday present to self.

    Unfortunately I don't know anyone who has either so I'm left with going to the stores to play
    with them from time to time :+).

    Was going to switch to Tmobile from AT&T, but now they are not instore in NYC anymore.
    I will however switch still due to the JUMP program vs AT&T's next.

    Again thanks for the breakdown!
