Not that there were many options, but, I remember doing this for my first Blackberry (Pearl 8100). I think the Pearl was just as easy to take apart as the Q10. Plus, I remember how they used to have different color Keyboards available from third party vendors for the Bold 9000. I always wished for Blackberry to have an option to switch the LED colors on our keyboards. Same way third party vendors can manipulate the RGB on the status light. *sigh*, like I said, wishing. Anyways.

This is actually the Keyboard I replaced due to the double-typing issue.

I plan on opening my phone again soon, to convert it to the white keyboard and switch the black to silver bezel.

So, for whoever is out of warranty and have no choice but to switch out the keyboard or any other parts, this is the chance for you to mod it to your taste.

P.S. Not responsible if you try this at home and break your phone.

    Thanks, FCBAndrea.

I will use this keyboard once my other parts arrive. I actually cleaned the keyboard, colored it and put it back together. I will see if the double-typing on that keyboard persists.

    Thanks man.

    I was thinking,

Silver Bezel, white keyboard, black part that's right below keypad (maybe white). Not sure yet. All else will remain black.

    I was also considering,

Gold Bezel and white and gold keyboard.

    I'll see what I decide.

    Thanks for the comments guys.

I just used sharpie Markers. As you can see, from left to right. I used, Purple, Blue, Orange, Red, Yellow, Green, Teal Green and Light Green, to see which looks the best.

I will upload a few pictures I took as I went along.

I actually broke off a small piece from the keyboard that I didn't notice when I was prying it apart, and resulted in the keypad lights not turning on. I ended up taking the newer keyboard apart to take off the working pcb board/flex cable. I took a picture of the broken piece for reference.

As soon as I get home I will upload the pics.

I did something similar with my 9900. I watched a tutorial online on how to change the keyboard color. I colored Scotch tape with a red Sharpie and laid it over the keyboard membrane. It made the keys a lot stiffer, but it looked pretty cool!

Remember the old "Legacy" modding days?-img_00001372.jpg
    Red is my favorite color

I wanted to do the same thing with my Q10 but I was too afraid to break my keyboard. This is my second keyboard with double-typing... maybe I'll try changing the colors for my third keyboard.

My Q10 is also lightly modded already... if you want to call a silver bezel modding.

    Sorry for the delay,

Here it is. Let me know what you guys think. If you guys want to tackle this on your own, don't be afraid to ask any questions.
I will try and reply as soon as I get a chance.

I will perhaps have this setup temporarily, as I do plan on getting a new Silver or Gold Bezel, Housing and White Keyboard.

As you can see here. This is the piece I broke-off accidentally. Its stuck to the keyboard itself with some light adhesive. You need to either use tweezers or a needle to lift up VERY gently. So you pry the keyboard starting from the top and work your way down to the bottom, again, CAREFULLY. Bottom one shows the complete piece,

Hmmm, REV.1? Revised Keyboard? Look at the dates as well. I believe revisions came about 6 to 7 months after release?

Do all of the colors look lighter than they actually are? Like red becomes pink, blue becomes light blue, etc. I noticed this with my 9900. I'm wondering because I want to make my Q10 keyboard red but I don't want it to look pink.

And have you noticed any decline in double typing?

    Thanks!

Good question. If you're doing the entire keyboard one color. I suggest you use a big enough piece or pieces of red water balloon material. Usually, the sharpies fade with time and make the colors look lighter.

I use the water balloon technique on my Pearl 8100. I didn't notice much difference on the keys, since the balloon is rubber.

P.S. I also thought about DYE. Maybe put a drop of DYE of desired color to the key(s).

I just finished coloring my keyboard!

Remember the old "Legacy" modding days?-q10-colored-keyboard.jpg
Remember the old "Legacy" modding days?-q10-colored-keyboard-full-shot.jpg

My only gripe is that it makes the keyboard seem a bit darker than it used to, but I'm sure that I'll get over it. I don't recommend doing this unless you have another keyboard on hand, because there is a risk that you could really mess it up.

Remember the old "Legacy" modding days?-q10-keyboard-membrane.jpg

As you can see, I kept the keyboard and the membrane attached to each other so that I wouldn't break the connector between them. After you finish coloring (I used Sharpies), just snap all the connection points back together and you're good to go!

Thanks for giving me insight on how to do this on my Q10!

    I would like to add,

In order to get vivid and bright colors, you need the keyboard with the black around the keys right behind the keyboard itself.

The one from ebay is all clear, meaning the colors won't contain themselves as good as the black OEM keyboard. Hope that makes sense.
