Here I am on my 3rd BlackBerry Q10.

Not 3rd consecutive, mind you. I have been around the smartphone block these past couple years. I've used smartphones on every major mobile platform - BlackBerry, Windows, Android, and iOS.

Since the beginning of 2016 I've been using a Motorola Moto G 2014 as my daily driver. As a New Year's resolution, I vowed to use it for the rest of 2016 because I wanted to stop switching phones so much.

I did my very best to get the most out of it. I got a nice SD card to supplement its meager 8 GB of internal storage. I even rooted it and installed CyanogenMod 12, which vanquished the paralyzing lag issues of the notoriously memory-leaky Lollipop 5.0.2 which is still the latest official update from Motorola.

I had full (official) access to Google Play and all the apps I could possibly want. I had a beautiful 5" HD display. I had nice cameras. I had surprisingly decent battery life.

I had Android, the most popular mobile OS on planet earth.

What more could I have wanted?

A lot, it turns out.

BlackBerry's physical keyboard, for starters. Try as I might, I just cannot train my fingers to flick or swipe a coherent sentence together on a virtual keyboard. I don't think my brain is wired that way. I prefer to type each and every word out in its entirety without the aid of auto-complete, auto-correct, or any other auto-whatever. My typing style just isn't conducive to virtual keyboards and I'm reminded of that every single time I try to use one.

User-replaceable battery. With an OEM Battery Charger Bundle, you never have to worry about being tethered to anything.

BB10, too. The Hub, Active Frames, Peek & Flow, the overall buttery smoothness and performance of the OS. It's just too good to leave alone.

Tapping on an app icon and having it open instantly without delay, opening several apps in succession with the same response, toggling back and forth between these apps in almost effortless fashion without even a hint of lag or threats of the entire OS locking up - people who have never used BB10 will never know the sheer joy of this experience.

So here I am, back on a Q10. And it's 2016. And BlackBerry has relegated BB10 to maintenance and phase-out mode as it tries to save its handset business with its Android-based Priv.

But BB10 in maintenance and phase-out mode is STILL the best mobile OS on the planet. I figure it has another year or two of mainstream support left in it at least. Plenty of time for me to save up for a Passport.

And in the meantime, I intend to share tips, tricks, and observations - all things Q10 - right here in this very thread.

Newfangled, I always enjoy your posts and how you see the good in devices that most wouldn't consider today. You give detailed info, and you put everything to the test. The Q10 is still one of my favorites. I have a Classic now, but the Q10 had a great for factor too. I will be following this thread.

Dump the Q and go Classic! That will give you at least another year of BB10 love. Q's a great phone but prone to double typing. Classic's bigger better and has the ole school toolbar. You won't be disappointed.

My brother has a Classic and loves it. I wouldn't mind owning one. But I think if I do get another BB10 phone it'll be a Passport.

BTW, I replaced the keyboard in my Q10.

Classic has double typing issue, too. Imo, Passport SE and Q10 is the best combination.

Q-Tip #1: Installing the Google Play Store



Not everyone wants to run Android apps on their BB10 phones. But for those who do, thankfully there are options.

The Amazon app store comes bundled with the latest versions of BB10, but its already limited selection appears to have been stripped down even more for BB10 users. For example, Netflix is nowhere to be seen. Nor is Tapatalk. You can't even download Amazon's own Amazon Music app!

Fortunately, we can benefit from the dedication and resourcefulness of BlackBerry diehards like CB Forums user Cobalt232, who has made it possible to install the Google Play Store.

He has created the following easy-to-use guide:

If you are feeling adventurous and want to give this a try, please read the entire guide in the first post.

Now that I have the Google Play Store on my Q10, I can enjoy apps like Tapatalk, Amazon Music, Telegram (the latest version), and Netflix!

This is a nice thread. Very helpful tips! Although I'm committed to my Classic now but I do mess around with my Q10. Just not brave enough to change the keyboard some of the keys are sticky and repair is just ridiculously overpriced. I'd rather do it myself one day when I have the right tools and courage to do so. Always want a white keyboard on a black Q.

Getting a new SIM and keyboard for the Q10 so I can switch from my Passport as my daily driver.

Something about this bad boy that I love; the size, the feel, the removable battery, serviceability, the proper keyboard, and it's not even that much slower than the Passport especially if you're only using native apps. Looking forward to this thread.

It is a great phone for sure I even find myself going back to this for a little bit here and there from my G4.

My Q10 is still my weekly device I take to the gym for wifi,music streaming and browsing the web.

Compared to my Moto G? Night and day difference. CyanogenMod helped, but there were still times when lag was noticeable.

I don't experience that on my Q10.

For Whatsapp I use the default one I think, it's called present. For emails I managed to get the sound that came by default with BBOS, and it's pretty awesome.
