My phone batter is dying at early and earlier percentages depending on usage and I do not understand why a phone with "14%" batter would shut off. It's mildly annoying. Is it a hardware issue or a software issue?

Please always provide more info. How old is the phone or the battery? What software are you running? What kind of apps/services are you frequently using? Also provide screenshots of your device manager's battery tab, especially the services which consume power.

Besides we can't say much. It could very well be a busted battery. With today's phones being charged usually at least once per day, battery starts declining after about one and a half year, I notice that on my own Q10.
It of course could be software related.
