Hi, as we all know, OTG is not supported by the Q10. So is it a hardware or software thing? If it's a software thing, is it possible that future updates may make the BlackBerry Q10 fully support OTG?

    Thanks!

It's both. The port itself is a bit different than a standard micro USB port, and then the software also has to support it. So your Q10 won't support it.

USB OTG is a must have. It's one of those conveniences that once you have you wonder where has it been all your life. I digitize all my paperwork and this feature has eliminated my laptop out of the picture.

Well, with regards to the port, I use a micro usb OTG cable on my note 2 with the same micro usb where I plug in to charge the phone. So my OTG cable and the charging port is of the same.

Since my Q10 has the same micro usb port with my note 2 where I plug in my OTG, you think it is a possibility just to have the software update in the future?

    I personally think it's a software thing.

As the chip behind the usb connector needs to send and receive data over the cable nevertheless being it a otg-usb-stick or a computer, I would say this is not a hardware thing.

Even my old Sony Ericsson Phone was able to do USB otg.

But what from I've heard, for using otg on the Z30 you need a powered usb hub. (don't know if this is true)
That means that the power comes from an external source, and the micro usb connector on the Z30 doesn't provide power.

I think this same setting could be used with a Q10/Q5 if the Software would support it, as the phone only needs to send some different data packages through the cable if the power comes from an external source

USB OTG is both hardware and software.
The hardware chipset and firmware must be compatible to OTG standard along with proper connector types for you to be able to connect a device (USB key) to your smartphone.

    Ahhh..
Okay so a Micro USB connector has 5 pins.

In most cases when a device doesn't have OTG, only 4 of the pins are connected.

The magical 5th PIN is what "tells" your device to turn on USB Host Mode.

It's a Hardware and software issue that the Q10 doesn't have it.
It doesn't have the USB Port with the special 5th PIN action.

It also doesn't have the software for it.
Why include the software if there are hardware limitations?

That's like putting the Miracast settings and options into the Z10.

I believe that the BlackBerry PlayBook had the hardware support for OTG but not the software so without tinkering I don't think OTG is possible on the PlayBook.

That one is fine for the Passport but still won't work for the Q10. Pity, those two sided OTG are excellent.

From what I read, the stick itself is already a USB. Pls answer the next question because I am going to get one. Does the device recognize another USB plugged in?
    Tks,
