These are probably the dumbest questions, but I have watched several 'help' videos on the device and none of them have worked.
SO:
1. How do I display the lock screen (that has the notifications etc.)? When I press the power button on top, the sleep screen (that is, a blank black screen) appears. I have switched all the settings on the 'lock screen' menus back and forth - clearly I am doing something wrong.
2. The help videos show a long downward swipe brings the bedside screen (and I assume silences the notifications besides alarm) - I can't for the life of me get the downward swipe to do that, it will only bring the temporary half quick settings screen. Again, clearly there is a setting I haven't found.
Any help?

If you want bedside mode, you can set it in the quick settings or you go to the CLOCK app and swipe down from the top.

Top button (when screen is already black) will turn on to lock screen where notifications are. Then swipe down from that screen will give you sleep screen.

So that means I have to press the top button twice to get the lock screen from an active screen (like now, typing a message). No way to get to it from here, or the desktop, directly?

Yes, or just once if your screen goes to sleep by itself due to inactivity.

You have to press and hold the power button until the options to cancel, lock, or power off. Appears . Select lock and it will take u to the lock screen with the notifications...
