This keeps activating voice recognition software and then I can't turn it off

Any ideas how to fix this?

Settings > voice control > open with the mute key.

Also, you should be more careful, as you have to press and hold said key.

Which OS are you running? I'm running 2030 and don't have an option for the mute key either.

Blackberry should give us an option to use the middle (convenience key to launch apps). I used to launch the shortcutme app before so that I could run macros (multiple step processes) like sending an email to someone or creating a task with a due date of today with 3 buttons...
IMO these types of features are what make BB's way better than other handsets...
Hopefully this feature is made available in a future OS upgrade. It's one of the reasons I bought the Q10..

10.0? You should update your phone. It won't give you the option to change the middle key, but it will give you new features.
