When I booted up the phone for the first time, I had to connect to wi-fi so I connected to an unsecure network until I got to the home screen and I disabled wi-fi connection entirely.

If someone had my phone number... is this possible?

I encrypted the phone like two hours after I started using it.

If I seem paranoid it's because my iphone got hacked last year by some psycho I used to know- so I'm doing my best to not let it happen again. I've noticed some differences in the touch screen responsiveness- kind of freaks me out. However I could just be swiping or scrolling differently.

The extent of my iphone hack included my phone recording everything I said as well as being tracked by location.... so I'm hoping there's no way this is possible. With the celebrity nudes thing coming out I'm glad some light is being shed on the awful flaw in apples phone. Having your constitutional right to privacy etc infringed upon is just awful. Imagine having someone send your contacts emails supposedly from you making you look ridiculous. Yeah.

It's not about your Q10, bro. It's about how you use it. Example, the BlackBerry device is as secure as it gets but using 3rd party apps or cloud services like BOX or DROPBOX opens you up to security risks. Additionally, when you communicate cross platform there is a small risk as well. BBM from BlackBerry to BlackBerry is supposedly more secure than BBM from a BlackBerry to another OS. Basically, stick with your Q10, BlackBerry secure apps, and SD card instead of cloud storage and your safe unless you lose that SD card.

What makes you think it is hacked already?
The lag is just the phone Indexing, email accounts ex..... since first start. Let it sit over night and do a hard reset by holding both volume buttons untill you see boot screen. Indexing can take 24 to 48 hours.

1Use BlackBerry SO. Enterprise if u are business man.
2Don't install any software from android or any other os.
3Use the encryption option in your device.
4Always be care about what wifi are you connected. This is really important issue.
5Use passwd. to unlock your device.
Remember that everything can be hacked, but doing this your in the right way to be more dificult and maybe useless for bad guys. C.

    no you are not hacked.
restart phone holding power up and power down for 5 seconds.

now, if you are afraid, you can security wipe your phone, and on the initial screen you can skip the wifi selection.

Your good dude. And fwiw, you DON'T have to connect to a wifi network at setup. Just for next time, or if you install a leak etc. Just skip that part.

Sounds to me that you used a jailbroken iphone and left it unlocked and unattended to that psycho.
But it's a wise decision (certainly not paranoid) to improve your security with a blackberry.

A few golden rules (in addition to what you have already done):

    1. The weakest point is often the computer, not the smartphone. Learn to harden your pc/laptop and router in the first place.

    2. Never use simple passwords.

Your Q10 is secure out of the box, but you should check the settings.

    3. Check Security and Privacy in the settings:

    - Applications Permission: Disable everything possible
    - Diagnostics: Should be off.
    - Developer Mode: Should be off.

    4. Check Media Sharing: Everything should be off.

    5. Check Storage and Access: Access using Wi-Fi should be off.

    6. If you use bbm: If you watch 'private' videos on your BlackBerry, make sure you turn off status updates in BBM first | CrackBerry.com

    7. Mobile Network: The network mode should be ideally "4G&3G".

    8. Although apps from BB World are basically safe, dont give them any permission.
Most of them work good enough even without having any permission.

Finally, there is no hack for the Q10. Your data are safe.

Remember - just because you're paranoid it doesn't mean folks are not out to get you. Following basic security protocols like encrypting and using string passwords will make your BlackBerry impossible to hack for anyone but the NSA. Avoid shady software, like all Android apps, and you're good.

Go to settings, then security and privacy and then choose Encryption.
Choose Device Encryption and then media card Encryption.
This might take a some time to complete, depending on how much you have stored in them.
Remember Blackberry is known for there Encryption software.
Should have been your first action on your new phone.

It's true that third party cloud services like backup or harddisk is a risk. That's why you best get in encrypted on your mobile and make a back-up on a computer. It's the best way
