Depending on your carrier, they may not have 2G service available. For example, Bell in Canada was a CDMA carrier and when they went GSM, they only supported 3G, 4G, LTE. While the legacy GSM carrier, Rogers, supports everything from 1G to LTE.

That may be the case. When I set the Network Technology setting in my Z10 to GSM only, the connection icon changes to E from H on the top right hand corner of the Z10, but I still get data. Wouldn't that indicate that the device supports GSM 900 that the carriers here claim the device needs to be, whether 2g or 3g? But, when I do the same in my Q10, the icon changes to e from h (voice only), and still no data. I am totally confused, but something tells me the Q10 is not a GSM900 device.

I don't fully understand all this terminology, but the only thing I can tell from the charts is that SQN100-5 Q10 is one of the two models that do not support 900 frequency in the HSPA category (100-1 and 100-5 models don't, while 100-2/3/4 models do). Isn't that the reason for the problem?
