Hi everyone! This is my first post on this forum, but as a long-time Blackberry user, I've been lurking this forum for quite a while.

Up until last month, my Q10 was working perfectly. I don't like having many apps (that's the main reason I'm still with BB10, I like how useful yet simple it is!) so I've only got WhatsApp. Since last month, the Q10's OS constantly crashes (three or four times a day), meaning that with its long boot times, it has become quite an unreliable device (in an emergency, can I trust that this phone won't simply crash on me?). I don't understand why it's crashing so much, as I've only got WhatsApp and two email accounts added (one IMAP, the other Exchange). No camera pictures, no downloads, nothing. I've tried several things before posting here, hoping it would fix the problem (security wipe, reloading with an autoloader, battery pulls...) but I simply don't know what to do. For some reason, the OS just crashes.

Another problem that's come up recently is that the phone heats up quite a lot at the same time as the battery drains. It can go from 100% to 0% in just 4 hours, which is unacceptable. I believe this might have something to do with the OS crashes.

What can I do? Do I have to put my good old Q10 in the cupboard for good and sadly move on to something new? Is there absolutely nothing else I can do to stop this issue? It worked all right about a month ago! I'd really love to keep using my Q10, but it's so unstable that I just can't trust this phone anymore unless this is fixed!

Did anything happen to it (fall on floor etc) when this started?
Can you describe what happens when the OS "crashes", does the screen go black and the phone reboots?
When you reloaded the software, did you restore any kind of backup to the device afterwards?

I've dropped it a few times since I got it, but that's never affected the performance and I don't recall a specific fall that triggered this.
The screen goes black and the phone reboots, yes. I don't know if that's considered a crash, but it's the closest thing to a BSOD I've seen on a Blackberry xD.
I didn't restore any backups in case this brought back any corruption. Blackberry World has stopped working since I reloaded the software.

    Thanks for your help!

I seem to recall a problem with the battery leads not contacting properly and people using paper or cardboard to tighten the connection? Maybe check that as the problem would lead to the behaviour you are describing. Also how old is your battery? Maybe you need a new one.

I'd say it sounds like some kind of hardware failure, might be the battery connection brookie pointed out. I don't think you need a new battery though as that wouldn't generate the kind of heat you're experiencing - unless the battery cable is no longer connecting properly then yes, you'd need a new battery to solve that issue.

Concerning the BB World problem, see the fix here.

Thank you both for your help. After switching from a BBOS device, I've only had this brand-new Q10 for a year (managed to find a sealed one on Amazon), so the battery can't already be dead. I'll try the trick with the battery cardboard, which I actually already used back when I was a teenager with a Curve 9300 and the battery would disconnect when you moved the phone around too much. I don't understand why that would cause battery drainage and heating, though. I'm tempted to switch to a KeyOne or Key2, but I really like BB 10, way more than Android or iOS. I don't know what exactly it is about it that I love so much, it just works so well!
I'll try with the cardboard for a few days and report back. Hopefully that sorts everything out. If not, I might have to consider switching to a different Blackberry device (I'd be surprised a new BB, which used to be unbreakable, has lasted just a year, though).

Again, thank you so much for your help!

Not necessarily as batteries do degrade over time even if they have never been used. The Q10 has been stored in a box for a very, very long time. Good luck with your Q10, hope you get it solved.

Have you checked the Device Monitor to see what is eating up your battery so quickly?
I'm going to put my bets on WhatsApp.

Stored for a long time and discharging all the way is worse than daily usage. I suspect most Q10 were manufactured in 2013, so that "new" battery is well beyond the "fresh" date.

There were some battery health apps in BBW.... I used Battery Gru on my Z1. I'd give one of them a try.

If you do switch.... stick to the KEY2 or LE.

My Q10 started randomly rebooting several times a day back in December 2020. This started after I dropped it pretty hard. So, that's what I thought was the trigger. During January 2021, it has very seldomly done a random reboot. My Q10 gets over-heated, but only when it is watching porn.

It is a well known bug where the device randomly start to plays pron. Sorry to hear yours also affected.

AFAIK BB never solved this particular problem.

Maybe try the autoloader, but keep in mind it will wipe your device and there is no guarantee the bug will be eliminated.

Also if the pron problem stays even after the autoloader just close the amok runner program. You can also disable the network data.

As posted above I would use the device Manager to ID what apps/processes are using the most power. That's your best starting point. Feel free to share what you find and we can try to help. I know that, for me, stopping the Android Runtime after a restart and eating it off when I'm not using it made a huge difference, but I wasn't relying on any Android apps like WhatsApp.
