    Dear All,
I was using the BB9900 for over two years and i only manage to use 100mb of data monthly,
I usually work from home so i have my blackberry connected to wi-fi hence the low data usage,
but since i bought my BB Q10 i have been using over 1gb of data every month and i still have the same apps as my
9900 and i still work from home and my Q10 is connected to wi -fi most of the time, so what is consuming
over 1gb of data on my Q10 monthly, please any advice??? or what am i doing wrong??? or what should i watch out for???,
please advice because over 1gb of data is causing me extra money on my fido bill every month.

Do you do a lot of internet browsing, watching YouTube videos etc? You're probably seeing high data consumption because the browser is a lot better and you tend to be visiting websites more often...

I would suggest restricting access to Internet on most apps (except the ones you trust/want to let use internet) to make sure that a rogue app isn't using up your data plan.

Your best bet is to experiment around and start off with absolute mininum and/or check your usage very frequently (daily basis) and when you're at about 50MB away from crossing the limit, disable data connection to prevent going over the limit!

Turn off App Permissions in 'App Permissions' that don't need to be on.

Turn off Send Diagnostics in Settings > Security

Turning Location off helps quite a bit but then BlackBerry Protect doesn't work.

    Set apps to update manually.

Buy Evolution Browser. It doesn't load web page ads which helps. Faster too.

I used about 300-400Mb on my 9900. I'm using just over 1Gb on my Q10. I had to buy an extra Gb last and this month.

I know what you mean I got a alert yesterday that I'm over my 2.5gig unlimited allotment.
The first time I've ever gone over and received that notification on any phone I've had.

You said you mostly use wireless. When you are do you turn Data Services off? I am mostly in wireless environments too so I keep Data Services turned off unless I am not around a wireless connection. I also turned off Push and get my email manually. Doing both of those really reduced my data usage. Now I use less than 100 mb a month.

Make sure if you use Box ( or anything like that ) that the auto backup is set for wifi only...I made that mistake and it was backing up the HD vids and pics via the mobile network...also Tune In radio was using mobile data rather than wifi even when it was set for wifi only ! _ so when I use it now I tirn off mobile data and it has no option but use wifi.

Not much you can do about it. My only advise to you is to use Opera Mini (it is kind of similar to legacy blackberry devices. if you are running 10.2.0.1047 with 4.2.2 android runtime from OS 10.2.0.810 you can convert the Opera Mini apk to bar and side load to your device. Opera compresses the data so you should be able to save on it.

I was under the impression that if I had my wifi on, it would take priority over my data plan for usage. Am I wrong?

The big difference here is BIS. BB9900 and older devices use BIS which compresses data. BB10 phones don't use BIS anymore so data consumption is higher although the user activity is the same or similar with user activity on the 9900.

I thought that my first month with my Z10 would be my last when I saw my increased data usage!

The problem is that the increased speed of the Z10 over my 3G legacy BlackBerry, amongst the other improvements, is just too good to turn my back on I made a few changes to my Internet usage habits, device and app settings as well as the network I use and now I'm fully BB10'd with no need to look back!

I second what sbx9900 said. The bold uses bis which compresses data. The bb10 devices are just as hungry for your data as ios and android.

I use Wifi as often as I can and whenever it is available but the Data Monitor app tells me I've used 1050MB of mobile data and I'm about half way through the month on my 2 Gig bundle. That's down from a projected 5 Gig usage that I started on

After some readjustment I'm sure many people will get BB10 data usage under control and within acceptable limits. It will always still be possible to bust open the data flood gates but with a little care this should mostly be by choice not by accident.

I am also at over 12 GB of data, and no idea why. My phone used almost 7 GB of data this morning while I was sleeping. I had only a few apps open (BeWeather Pro, My Verizon, Google Talk, Calendar, and Pictures), but somehow Wi-Fi wasn't working when I woke up my phone. It is a new replacement phone that I setup last night, so I didn't even have Dropbox or Box logged in yet. Working with Verizon tech support now to try to figure out what happpened. Grumble Grumble....

How is this acceptable? 10x the data for the same basic functionality? This cost me $150 for a week in Europe? What fruitcakes designed this?

How do you turn off App Permissions?

    Set apps to update manually?

I'm in the same boat with the z10. With my note 2 or my HTC 8X I use on average 8 gigs a month. With my z10 I'm hitting 16 gigs. Same usage so I'm assuming bb10 maybe doesn't compress data?

You are correct that wifi takes priority over wifi when I have a strong wifi connection. But when I am not in a wifi environment I don't want data services running in the background if I am not using data; I feel that helps to burn the battery. When I had my Treo just having data on burned up a LOT of battery. So that is why I only turn data on if I need it and no wireless is available.

You can turn off your phone and turn off your data and you will save a lot of money.

It's really unbelievable that they had a device in the Bold 9900 series that worked fine w data and set a good standard and they just ignored their own track record and decided to release a device that's a data hog? How stupid is that?
