I assume you're using Hub. If so, go to Settings. Choose the account you want to modify. Scroll down and look for the "Notification Settings" portion.

From there you can tweak to your heart's content. For you specific question you'll want to set "Notification Sound" to "Silent."

That's the problem. I have the Hub sound set to silent. The yahoo mail app however does not seem to have the same option and it beeps when an incoming email comes in. I can't figure out how to silence it. Other than to remove the app from the home screen.

I'm taking a wild guess at this based on my Gmail account.
But tap the app tray icon from your home screen.
Go to settings.
Than find and select, sound & notification
Than scroll down to the bottom and select app notification.
Than find and tap on yahoo.
Once there, turn on block.

That will allow hub to still notify you of emails. But stop yahoo's independent notification.
