I use the camera on whatever phone I'm using for pics for work quite a bit (engineer). I run into instances where it would be very handy to have the ability to manually control the focus of the camera. There are a few new smartphones that offer this capability (LG G4 for ex.). Will the Priv rear-facing camera support manual focus?

My passport allows me to touch where I want to focus and lock it by holding the place... in effect manual focus because it's held and locked on that focus until I change it. I'm sure it will carry over to the priv.

Thanks, but most smartphone cameras do that actually. The trick is when I have something that (for instance) is long and tapering away from me and I want to take a photo about halfway down the object. Those systems get all confused. With manual focus I can just adjust the depth of field / focus to the point I want and take the pic.

For example here's how manual mode works for the LG G4:

[nevermind... I don't have the privileged of sharing links yet]
go to the 1min 5sec point for the YouTube video called "LG G4 Camera Manual Mode - Feature Focus"

Anyway, I'd love it if the Priv offered this sort of manual control. Anyone know?

Every camera will support manual focus, the question is, does the software (stock camera app) support it? I don't think we know. But regardless, there are 3rd party Android apps that will give you all the manual controls you want. Even BB10 has a couple of apps that would give you manual controls, I had one in my passport, that included manual focus. So you're safe

I do not believe that is true. I think it depends on the manufacturer (camera and phone) and what 'controls' are offered to the camera software. Different phones offer different levels of control over the camera functions.

For example, the popular app CAMERA FV-5 has a table which summarizes what features they can control on what phones. Since I still can't post links, search for:

camera fv-5 Current state of manual camera controls

You'll note that a number of popular phones simply do not do manual focus.
