    Happens on all platforms apart fromBB10 I'm afraid because no one (with the music industry in particular as an example) wants you to listen to music for free.

    There are plenty of streaming alternatives which can be for free. Spotify, Deeper, Apple Music, YouTube Red...

    Yes, technically it's possible. This is not an Android or API limitation at all.

    The problem is that Google is actively removing such apps from the Google Play store. They are doing this because they want to sell Youtube Red, a subscription service that lets the normal youtube app do exactly that (stream music in the background).

    Almost no dev will focus on such an app right now because it will be mostly wasted effort if he can't get it into the Play Store and earn money for it.

    There are 3rd party apps like FireTube that have background play but apps with that feature aren't allowed in the Playstore. You can get it directly from the FireTube website or Amazon app store.
