The OS is android designed by google. BB has then mades its changes to the OS and swapped the "default" Linux kernel to a more secure one by grsecurity. So there are 3 sources for updates. Google can update android (Android 6 M), BB can update their skin/security enhancements and grsecurity can make updates to the kernel. Hopefully BB can make any of these changes and push them thru without carriers slowing things down

Google will post the source for Marshmallow. Blackberry will take it, make any modifications necessary, test it with tools provided by Google so it can be certified for Google apps. Google and carrier approves the final build and then it gets sent OTA to your phone.

The real question is if Blackberry releases an update, can we load it without waiting for the carrier like we do now?

That's not happening if you're buying it from a carrier, reason number 2 on why subsidized phones suck.

Maybe, just maybe you get it faster if you have unlocked. I hope they get rid of the system where it's tied to the SIM carrier even when it's unlocked. Never have I seen unlocked phones being tied to carrier's release schedule except for BlackBerry 10.
