I use Adblock Plus. Only works over WiFi. It may actually slow things down a bit while it hunts for and terminates ads.

I don't actually use an ad blocker outside of my home WiFi, I haven't bothered to test any out, or to switch away from Chrome.

But on home WiFi, this works swimmingly.

Not free but worth it, as it blocks youtube ads too. Also got it for my PC.

Your link to pi-hole.net doesn't work. It was only revealed when I replied to this post using With Quote.

I've never heard of an ad blocker that doesn't work on cellular data. I've used Firefox with AdBlock Plus for years and it works off and on cell data and WiFi.

Does no one here use Netguard? It works by setting up a local VPN (automatic) and you can set it to filter traffic using a hosts file of your choice.

Even works within some/most apps, but you have to download the one from XDA/github, Google Play doesn't allow the filtering option.

And if you stick to using it for this purpose you can even stay with the free version!

-edit- forgot to mention it works systemwide, so you don't need a special ad blocking browser or extra plugins.

It all depends how the ad blocker operates. Some shove everything through a local proxy (Adblock Browser), some edit the hosts file on-device (root required), some act as DNS filters (Pi-Hole), whether and how they work depends on how amenable network settings (APN, etc.) are to being edited.

Not sure if mentioned but Rocket Browser has a built-in ad blocker and works quite well.

Do yourself a favour and switch to DNS66 or AdGuard.

I second the use of Pi-Hole as it blocks any ad requests that use a DNS query to reach a known ad server. My implementation allows use from anywhere. I use either:

    1. My own VPN that connects the phone to my home network. All traffic on that network uses Pi-Hole as the DNS.

    2. Expose the Pi-Hole DNS port to the world and configure my devices to use that as their DNS.

Bonus is I observed weird DNS queries from an iPad to various .gov domains in the middle of the night. I put a quick stop to that.
