So has verizon been as slow as usual to release software updates? Just got the PRIV and see it is still June. Are these updates always security or do we get a few extra surprises every now and then?

VZW is dedicated to being dead last when it comes to releasing updates. But watch what you wish for, sometimes the updates bring more issues than improvements. Assuming you're able to successfully install the update. Unlike me.

NO! You will still wait until Verizon releases the update.

And actually, Verizon's Priv and other somewhat recent BB phones have been unlocked when sold. But that only means that you do not need any special permission or UNlock code to use foreign sim cards in Verizon BB phones. You can go to Europe and buy a local sim card and just use it.
