I've been looking online but can't find a way to do this with an unrooted device:

Is there a way to set the back button to close an app (instead of just minimizing to the background from its first page), or maybe having a long press of the back button close the app from any screen within the app?
I find myself constantly having to go into the app switching window to close apps.
"Clear All" isn't the greatest option because of what it does (plus I like to have the Hub always there in the background).

I don't think that there is such option.

Is there a way to equalize the sizes of the frames/panes or app images in the "current apps" (square box icon). I find the varying sizes distracting and/or a pain!

Yeah I know there's no option in the stock OS.
I was hoping for an app that can do it without root. I found one but it only works on rooted androids.

Hub is always in the background as a service otherwise you won't receive emails.

As for the recent apps, that's how Android does it. Moreover in Nexus devices, you don't even get an option to Close All.

Technically it's the Android that manages how many you can actually run in the background. The OS automatically kills ones that you don't use. Unless there's a badly written app, you don't need to kill any app manually.

I do close them as soon as I don't need one. Just how I was used to the BlackBerry Passport where I didn't have many running with Active frames.

In settings, display, then select recent and then select tile. All the frames will be the same size.
