Is it possible to unlock a Verizon Wireless branded phone for the purpose of receiving updates directly from BlackBerry instead of Verizon? I still plan on using Verizon's network

No. Having the phone unlocked merely makes it able to accept and use the sim card from another compatible carrier. It doesn't make it a factory unlocked device. Factory unlocked devices are recognized by the IMEI numbers.

Your updates will still come from Verizon.

And just as additional information - the Verizon Priv is sold UNLOCKED. Meaning you don't need any special code to use a foreign sim card in the Verizon Priv. (but there are limits to US carriers working on the Verizon model - but if you were to go to Europe you could use a sim from one of those carriers).
