    Just quoting TechRadar's conversion price...

Doesn't the US have taxes on imports of smartphones?
Still over $1000 in Canadian dollars after tax. I don't think comparing it to the S6 Edge is appropriate. Samsung practically owns the android space and BlackBerry just entering. Bad strategy to price on par or higher.

Par is fine but not with Samsung. I was hoping they try to par with LG and Motorola first, but apparently I could be wrong.

That's what I was hoping also, premium phone with a mid tier price to entice the public. Guess they have other plans.

If the price is above $699, I'm definitely out. $599 - 649 is the sweet spot, imho.

Undoubtedly the addition of the slide out pkb adds to the bottom line, but as an inaugural Android device it needs to be priced appropriately. Higher volume at lower margins to get back in the game.

And, pricing it higher completely contradicts Chen's stated goal of 5M devices / annum. If he does that, then I start buying into the theory that Chen wants out of the hardware business.

When you see 64 bit quad core android phones available for 132$ like the Xiaomi (on some sites like gearbest) you can't imagine how they manage to justify x7 price bump for just another Android phone... as secure as it may be, 780 euro for it is far too much.
By the way a friend has one of those Xiaomi and it's really not bad at all, and if I have to go for an android one day i'd certainly go for an affordable one not a 'premium' device

There are Brand New, Unlocked S6 Edge Plus (the big one) on UK for sale at 460, so there will be much cheaper Priv's selling than ThePhoneHouse.

BRAND NEW SAMSUNG GALAXY S6 EDGE+ PLUS BLACK SAPPHIRE 32GB UNLOCKED SM-G928 | eBay

Just don't buy at the same place you see, we will always have cheaper propositions
    Yeah, that's Ebay.

It didn't to anyone else - that was part of the problem.

This price + no carrier interest... well I open up the marketing budget...
You're talking rubbish, nobody in the UK buys newly released handsets for cash. The price of the pp wasn't an issue. The lack of marketing was.

Incase someone at BlackBerry is watching this thread: $699 Canadian is perfect, I'll buy it from day one. $799 Canadian, I'll have to wait a few weeks and postpone purchase until either a sale or buy a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+. $800+, and sadly I won't buy it, probably sell my BlackBerry Classic and go back to the cave man days and communicate by grunts and drawings of little stick people.

But seriously, if it's expensive I'll get a new Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ or even the Moto X Style.

I'm not throwing away $1000+ and becoming one of maybe 100,000 that buys this phone at that cost. I can think of $1000 that I can spend on something better, like my rent for the month..

Expect the off contract price indicates the contract price and TCO - they don't have the brand equity in the UK to play at that end of the market.

In that case, I would do as I did with passport in November:
Wait for very good deal (like $100-200 off during black friday weekend) on Amazon.com (us) and send it to uk.
It would be still more than 100 cheaper than buying in uk. Even after all taxes n shippings.

I guess you mean 579,99 and that's a quite reasonable price. The handset is not even yet released so obviously no demo units...so stop bull**** around.

Hopefully BB will sell it directly at launch, if so will buy one and test it out if I like it will sell my S6 edge. Currently local Toronto price for a Gold 32gb S6 edge is averaging $700.00 on Kijiji so whatever price Blackberry decides to sell the Priv for will not hurt my pocket book too much in the end.

Yes, just seen this myself BlackBerry Priv price confirmed, and it's not cheap | TechRadar

Disappointingly expensive. Although others might say it's 'reassuringly expensive'
It's difficult to see how this pricing strategy will get everybody rushing back to BlackBerry. Premium prices are a deterrent to many punters and although the Priv will undoubtably be a premium product it seems likely that this price will limit sales. On the other hand BlackBerry is committed to servicing the prosumer & enterprise markets, so the average punter may not matter.
Phones are always more expensive when you pay for them monthly as part of your plan, aren't they?
I bet buying it up front will be cheaper.

Paying for the phone outright is almost always less expensive than paying for it on one of those monthly plans.

yes my mistake should be 579.99, as for demo units the company does not stock in stores or have Blackberry display with demo phones since Z30,and yes the Priv has not been released yet and obviously no Priv demo phones,
do you need help spelling your insulting remark.

Of course, it's like financing a car, there's interest. If you pay everything upfront you can get a better deal because interest is out of the picture.

    Wow!

I've said the Priv would be DOA if BB priced it at iPhone 6s and Samsung Edge levels. Pricing it at *more* than either of those phones, IMO, makes that outcome certain.

    Well Done BB, Well Done!
