Recently bought one of those AT&T Privs but hate having to use autoloader to get updates, is there any way I can buy an AT&T Sim card off amazon or something and have it allow me to at least get the OTA security updates?

OK. I got the February update this morning. I kept the ATT Sim in overnight on charge but didn't see any updates when i first checked this morning. I saw a comment that i could manually change the date to tomorrow to get around the 24 hr wait after checking for updates. I did that twice and then checked again for updates and there it was. Just a security update and it took about 20 minutes to fully download and finish updating everything.
As a further note, when it had finished the download and installed the initial OS'S I had to leave for an appointment. So I unplugged the phone and took it with me. It was fully charged and by the time it had completed the update and recalibrated (not the official word the update used) the 144 apps the battery was at 80%. Thar could be one of the reasons for it to be plugged in to receive updates. Just my opinion.

My understanding is that any airtime will expire in a month, double check me on that. I've also been advised that a phone call to AT&T will reactivate the SIM after the 30 days, without airtime on it.

Make sure you have a good wifi connection before you check for updates.
A couple of people have reported that they could not find an AT&T update unless the phone was on charger, this makes no sense to me, but it's free, so try it.
The date/time change trick does work.

The US carriers, and prob Canadian too, would gleefully kidnap your grandmother and hold her for ransom if it would keep you on their network.
So any of this could change at any time, but I don't see how they could deny you updates just because you were on a prepaid plan.

Also check your APN, it should be on an AT&T setting. You did turn phone off before changing SIM? It's possible the new SIM did not automatically reset APN.
$25 will last 3 months. That I can definitely confirm, as that is what I purchase. If you top off before the expiration date, that balance rolls over (the maximum being $500 that you can have in total). $100 lasts a year.

I can tell you that both Verizon and T-Mobile devices update without SIM or any SIM. I guess AT&T is special.
    All Canadian carriers too.

You have specific experience with the Priv? Most devices will update regardless of SIM, on most networks.
IF the Priv will update as you say, then it is a new development, as they wouldn't from launch till a month or so ago.
It's the AT&T units we are hearing about, because they have the most out, and recently have been priced close to 1/2 retail, at some online retailers.

Thats a lot of money for updates. I guess if you saved $200+ on the AT&T variant you still come out ahead. And if you travel to US, you are good to go.
Hopefully within a year this situation will resolve, the FCC and FTC looking into phone updates can't hurt.
Again, a couple of people have said AT&T will reactive the GoPhone SIM, even with no airtime.

Yes, I believe you have 60 days once your airtime expires before the SIM is rendered inactive.

I'm in the same situation as you as I just bought an unlocked AT&T priv. I also ordered an AT&T sim on ebay so I can get updates. Did you get the Marshmallow update yet?

Maybe we can turn this into something positive. I live in the east end of Toronto. If anyone wants to meet up somewhere for a coffee or a beer, they can swap out their Sim for my att one. Do the update and swap theirs back in. Message me if anyone is interested

So nice of you! We'll need a place with wifi lol.
Question. Did you have put money into the sim in order to get the update? Or does activating the sim work already?

I filled in my Canadian address but when I got to the state section I picked Florida since we visit there regularly. The zip code I just picked one in Naples and it gave me a Florida number.

I mistakenly posted this in another thread so here it is where It was supposed to be.

I reinstalled the ATT Sim today to try and get the may security update. Once again I checked and it came back with no update available so i manually advanced the date to the next day to get past the 24 hr wait period and tried again... same response. I advanced the date manually for the second time and checked once more and viola! It started the may security update. I heard about this somewhere else in the forum so I thought I'd pass this method on again. Hope it helps.

I've seen reports of it working right off the bat, and others where it took a few tries, so far no reports of it not working at all.

I'm going to guess that those in an AT&T area, get the 'trigger' directly from AT&T's network, while those in Canada or elsewhere are relying completely on wifi. Please don't quote me on this, unless you specify that it's a guess.

The interesting part I read someone with verizon priv using in SK Telekom (south Korea) received may update without hassle..looks like att is the problem

That IS interesting. I'm on Rogers here in Canada. Not sure if there is any correlation to the provider or not. My wifi is with Bell.

It's not just AT&T, it's any carrier version, there just happen to be a whole lot of AT&T devices being sold cheap on eBay and Amazon, so that's what we hear about.

If he had a Rogers, Bell, TMo, Verizon, Telus or AT&T variant he would not get the updates, unless it had had a SIM from the original carrier.

I'm questioning the facts, or details in the SKT / Verizon report

Or maybe SKT is just very advanced and liberal, and puts every update available from the whole world up for for grabs. I'm doubting that.

It may be a problem limited to the North American carriers.
I've seen reports that the newest LG's and Samsung's are starting to experience this update across carriers problem.

Your wifi doesn't know or care. It can't tell the difference between a porn movie, phone update, or recipe for dessert.
