For those people comparing it to the Passport release, there is one big difference. The Passport was available on Amazon also. For the Priv, this is it (besides the carriers).
Just checked with my corporate rep at att and she go buy direct from BlackBerry.

Not a good sign for carriers support

It's slowly rolling out. Amazon.de has it already AND promoting it.

I took a few data points before they limited the max order to 5 and extrapolated from it that they were selling about 2 phones per minute. That's not very much at all. For comparison, Apple sold ~3000 iPhone 6s/6s Plus phones per minute in the first three days of sales when averaged out over the full 72 hours of initial sales.

Let that sink in for a minute...PRIV ~2 phones per minute, iPhone ~3000 phones per minute.

Full disclosure, I am aware of the expanded availability of iPhone at launch compared to the PRIV, as well as the brand allure of Apple compared to BlackBerry. Regardless, it is a huge difference in demand.

I'm surprised you're even comparing this phone to the iPhone at all.

Well, if you want to be the best, you compare to the best I guess. If you aim low you hit even lower.

Can't really compare the two anymore. Initially Blackberry wanted to sell 10 million phones a year, but Chen has now cut they back saying he hopes to sell 5 million a year. Last quarter they sold 800,000. The iPhone sold 10 million the first weekend.

Yes, if you choose the unlocked one on the US site. They have carrier phones too. Amazon.ca only sells unlocked.

True, but in the US none have yet announced availability (they probably want locked ones) or price. Further, I'm not very interested in a locked device these days; I like being able to tell a carrier to stuff and port out if I get upset with their service or policies, and we have a bunch of MVNOs here that all run on the same networks, so there is a surprising level of price and service level competition even though you only have two "official" GSM/LTE-based carriers.

Not a week sooner. Nov 6 looks to be the official date for all carriers.

Out of the first 500*, there are 377 left on the UK preorder

500 is my guess of the starting number because it maps to the trend and also is consistent with the US.

5 million devices... BlackBerry needs to sell 13,700 +/- devices per day! thats 570 devices per hour. pre orders look to be 200-300 per hour. BlackBerry really needs to throw some billboards out there, tv commercials, youtube interruptions.. common BlackBerry.. its your plan, take action!!!!

The US is a bit slower than that - before they shut down the stock information - it seemed to be about 90 per hour. The UK is absolutely glacial - it is 106 over the last sixteen hours but that is front-loaded and the current rate is about 4 per hour or one every 15 minutes.

Did anyone find out the CAN numbers?

Yes, but no carriers, in the US, and in many, many other parts of the world have even heard of the Priv yet. Once the carriers announce, once they are in store, once we see some form of advertising (even if it's blah marketing), the sales will increase. To 13,700+ per day? Beats me, but an increase nonetheless.

So let's think about this - what other device sells in the 1.5 million units per quarter range?

And, will the new Priv be able to stand out in a world of many Android devices to achieve the market penetration it needs?

    I did.

As far as the carriers selling it for $100 less, I'll believe it when I see it. Bell and Telus have not confirmed prices, and , although a handful of people have apparently pre-ordered at that price, Rogers have nothing official up yet either.

There are advantages to a factory-unlocked device (as opposed to SIM-unlocked), and it may be worth it to pay the extra $100 for that alone. It's nice to take the carriers out of the equation for updates.

Out of interest, for somebody who isn't particularly tech savvy, what are the advantages of factory unlocked compared to SIM unlocked?
