    This started earlier today but I've been getting weird Japanese/Chinese characters when someone texts me. Not all of the time, though. Seems to happen when they try to send me larger messages. I'm on AT&T using Textra

    I get that too. It's from iPhone people with iOS 10. Pretty sure it's an issue on there side

    Same here for me. There is usually some kind of I-phone emoji involved, but the whole message looks like a Chinese version of Egyptian hieroglyphics

    I started receiving random chinese-looking texts similar to yours about 10 days ago. There doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason as to when or from whom . . . although it does seem like it happens to longer texts. Frustrating. Do we just wait to see if it's resolved?

    It was when an iPhone user sent an emoji to an ATT subscriber on a non-iOS device. It's apparently been fixed as of a few days ago. See the Google product forum and reddit threads linked above, and the ATT 'solved' status of it:
