I have tried multiple weather widgets and they all are giving me grief when it comes to updating on the home screen. They either don't load on the home screen or never update with current values. Any recommendations.

Weather Underground seems to work the best after trying many others.

Sadly, in order to get the most accurate weather forecasts in Canada I have to use apps like Weather Office that gets it's data from Environment Canada, and none of these apps support widgets!

    I use WU as well.

Pick the app that is most accurate in your area, and use 'Beautiful Widgets' for the widget.
If you are in the SE US, accuweather is best, if you are in the Pacific NW US, weather underground is better.

Real Feel is in the upper left, notifications area.
You can make it much smaller, or bigger, or only show today, and of course put it wherever you want it.
Time / date is also beautiful widget.

I used to use AccuWeather but found it to be a huge battery drain... that was a while ago though, so maybe it has improved.

Haven't noticed it using much battery, I do have location turned OFF for it, background data is ON. So it updates properly, just stays on my home location. Not really much difference from one side of Atlanta to the other, so thats cool with me.
If I take a real trip, I do have to remember to either turn location back ON, or tell it where I'm at.
It has a list of 8 or 10 locations stored, so if I went to the same places often, it would be really easy. Doesn't help me much, as I seldom go back to the same place.

There is no one -best weather app-, it depends on where you are. So pick the best for where you are, and if you aren't happy with the widgets included, change them.
    That why Android exists.

Exactly... there is a plethora of widget options to choose from with 1weather and they are all highly customizable so one can match their theme/wallpaper/etc... I'm currently using this widget Priv weather widget-screenshot_20160703-132305.jpg

Weather Timeline is one of my favorites for details, you can choose from different providers including Wunderground. Widgets are highly customizable, opacity 0-100% plus either fixed or geolocation - one is a flip card style with several locations (shown in 3rd pic).

And despite its low rating on Google Play, I really like Dark Sky.
