As many of you already know the Blackberry Prive will be running android. My main concern would be around security, how is blackberry going to attempt to secure android? what benefits me getting a blackberry Priv over any other android phone looking just at the security, Thoughts ?

    From Google's terms of service:

“When you upload, submit, store, send or receive content to or through our services, you give Google (and those we work with) a worldwide license to use, host, store, reproduce, modify, create derivative works (such as those resulting from translations, adaptations or other changes we make so that your content works better with our services), communicate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute such content,”

Blackberry cannot secure Android from Google. In my eyes this is a fundamental flaw. But from anything else they have a working chance. I read they put a unique PIN in the chipset to avoid spoofing, they'll get into end-to-end encryption and other secure communication forms. They will integrate BBM more into secure communications and they have a back-end service named DTEK that will apparently monitor 3rd party app behavior and present the data to you in a form easy to understand. They also may put some roadblocks in place for those wishing to root the phone (source needed).

On a more enterprise level, they will probably start integrating more of their multi-device-management services into their skin, for any enterprise customers who get onto the PRIV.

Before I take a stab at this, for the sake of comparison, what security do you feel you have on your BB10 device today? People have widely different opinions about what this word means to them.

For me its more of a philosophical decision.
Blackberry has always been a phone company, meaning any product or service they created was specific to that industry. The phone and OS IS the product. The Google and Apple business model is different. The device and OS are not the product, the device and OS are the distribution channels for the product. WE ARE the product under this business model.

I like the idea of buying a product, not becoming one....which is why I stick to BB10.

At the risk of derailing the thread, (OP, please answer my original question so I can address it)...

I would agree with your analysis. But as long as you stay mindful of it, the rewards can be of great value. The BlackBerry business model would never have brought us Google Maps / Earth / Street View. The BlackBerry model would have never brought us iTunes. These are amazing things - revolutionary, life changing things.

Although I'm sympathetic to your point of view, I personally do not feel a slave to Google. I think of it as a symbiotic relationship where both sides win.

Now let me just start by saying i have used a range of Blackberry devices from the Z10 to the Q10 to the bold 9900 and the curve 8520, i have always had piece of mind when it comes to security when using BBM or using Blackberrys own OS through out the years it has serves me well when it comes to a security point of view now i work for the government im not going to go into what i do but i have worked with a wide range of departments, when it comes to blackberry devices these have always been a pain in the arse to work with due to being so secure and most of the times they have not been able to be decrypted without being sent off to specialists. My main query is now blackberry has moved to andoird it would be nice to see what they have done to provide end to end encryption ect ect to secure my device after many things i have herd and seen i would rather my device be protected from snooping governments and others.

Also i would like it add its not about who has brought us what and what companies do better or who can deliver a service better then one another, i feel that its how i can keep my information safe and secure from praying eyes. My phone is personal its something that i own and should be something that only my eyes should see unless i have shown an individual directly something i believe would be of interest to them

Your answer seems to be a bit vague, but here goes:

For information being sent out by your device (BBM, email, sms, etc), the information is no more secure than on any other platform.

The information that is ON your device however can enjoy a bit more security with BB10s password and device encryption implementations. It is yet to be seen how BlackBerry will deal with this on the Priv. They did mention security measures tied to hardware, and picture password.

The Android Runtime on BB10 does protect against rogue apps getting root access because of sandboxing, but again, if you're careful, this is not a huge issue, as most breaches are for personal data - which BB10 does not protect you from.

Of course, all devices enjoy better end to end security when on a BES, and when the information is contained within those users. This applies to other platforms as well.

As you correctly indicate, that's another matter entirely.

If you choose to believe that signing into Google establishes a master/slave relationship rather than a symbiotic relationship, then I can't argue that point. To each his own.

People have odd notions about security and privacy.

The security for email, sms, instant messaging, cloud storage, and social networks are controlled by the parties you signed up with, and have nothing to do with your smartphone.

If someone is concerned about rogue apps that they choose (on purpose or by accident) to install on their phones, then prevention of root access and permissions are important. We know the Android Runtime on BB10 prevents root access, but we don't know what is planned for the Priv. BB10 has granular permissions, and so will Marshmallow. In the meantime, we will have to see what the Priv with Lollipop will do about that.

Another notion of security is device access. Can someone get into your phone? BB10 has excellent password protection. Priv apparently has picture password too. Can it be circumvented? We'll see.

What about being able to stand up to a forensic analysis of your memory chips in a laboratory? BB10 has device encryption. I don't know if the Priv replicates that out of the box.

What about rooting? BB10 has never been routed because of signing keys and hardware authentication. Priv uses Grsecurity kernel hardening, and some type of hardware authentication as well. Not a lot of detail yet.

What is the extent of DTEK? What is BlackBerry Safeguard exactly?

Some people think having to sign in to Google is a privacy deal-breaker. That's purely philosophical, and I can't say much about that.

Browser updates are important for security, but with countless browsers to choose from, they will respond quickly with patches.

Bottom line: just like a Windows desktop machine, if some people bang away at the keyboard like a monkey and click yes for every pop-up box they see and end up with a thousand viruses and tons of malware, and others are careful and have none, what does that say about Windows security? What does that say about personal responsibility?

I'm not worried. The Priv will be as good or better than most, and I believe personal habits and responsibility trump all.

Question put forth was "Do you believe BlackBerry doesn't collect info", response was "yes". BlackBerry flat out states they collect information to improve products and services just as Google and Apple do, and in addition: "Also, if you choose to use Third Party Offerings with your BlackBerry account or device, certain information may be collected and disclosed to the third party, or from the third party to BlackBerry, in order to facilitate or improve the services and functionality provided."

    Bottom line, BlackBerry collects information.

The thing is you can't compare google with any other companies about data collection. Not even facebook is that good at this point.

Some folks like the sliding scale of data collection. Some actually believe that BlackBerry cares about them more than other companies.

LOL @ folks invoking scope: it's okay because BBRY only collects a teeny bit."
