With the recent news about Apple giving the Government the middle finger (good for them), the issue comes up of stingray devices.

Usually, a person of authority (read: beat cop) can plug in your device to one of these devices and do a data dump.

IOS and android are the main targets, while support for bb10 and windows devices was coming. But hey, who uses those?

Now, iOS is no longer susceptible to it, the new encryption methods means that while they can still do a data dump, it is encrypted.

Android is still able to be dumped and decrypted. So here is the question, is the Priv in particular affected by this?

I assume yes actually, I don't think blackberry can overcome the security holes in android.

But I don't know for sure. Does anyone here know?

Waiting for the "if you've got nothing to hide" crew to arrive. *whistles*

On topic, great question OP. I presume with the recent statements by John Chen, BlackBerry probably welcomes stingray devices.

A Stingray is a very different thing than a physical dump.

I don't think anyone plugs in a cell phone to a stringray, that's just not how it works.

Maybe you're thinking of something else.

Actually, you're right. I am thinking of something else.

A stingray captures over the air information, calls, texts, and data.

Usually data is encrypted (not always), but texts and calls are not. (Thanks carriers!)

I am not familiar with the name, but there is a device name that makes a physical data dump. That's what I'm concerned with.

Apple gives the government the middle finger in public but provides full access behind the scenes.

Well, they are a heavily consumer focused company, and they are moving into enterprise spaces.

Look at BlackBerry? They have a huge amount of government contracts, but are struggling.

At this point Apple may not even want those contracts, and it aligns with their self interests more to keep their phones encrypted.

Oooh, the second product on that page is juicy. A silicon to lift fingerprints from devices.

    Neat.

Stingray is a fake cellular tower designed to intercept traffic intended for mobile networks. They should be illegal for a law enforcement to deploy and illegal to manufacturer.
