I'll never understand why the prices in Canada/USA doesn't "include" the taxes that everyone (right?) have to pay.. reading 599$ I translate 599 + 20% VAT = circa 720$ so around 690 euros,so 699, Am I right? I was hoping for 599 euros at launch, as I've stated hundreds times!

Asking it to be cheaper than the passport at launch would be very optimistic, I would be amazed if it was at passport price (650 at launch).

Prices rarely ever include tax. Just the way it is here... 13% in Ontario.

When do you pay the tax? right when you purchase the item? or it will be billed later to you?

Funny thing about VAT and tax. It is actually illegal in several countries to display the price with tax.

The reason being that the price with VAT "masks" the true value of a product, making it harder to sell for the "real" price.

At the same time, it makes it so that if the government decides to raise the tax, then people who are used to seeing an all inclusive price may not notice. In some places this can be seen as a breach of freedoms.

When I was but a wee lad in my home country of Portugal, I was also used to seeing tax added prices. I believe the tax rate was 17% (about 15 years ago). So when I moved to the great nation of Canada, it was a shock to see prices with no tax, that were added at check-out.

And yes, for those who may not have experienced it, this is how it works. We pick a product off the shelf (or online). Let's say the Priv at 799. And at checkout, the tax rate is added (in my case it is 13%). For a grand total I don't feel like calculating right now. It is the merchant's duty to collect those taxes, who they then pay to the government during their own tax season.

why is everything in Canada has to be set according to the US?
Cause thats how the global financial system works. The USD is the world reserve currency and has been since the Bretton Woods conference in 1944. Im not here to teach economics and finance but if you care enough about your question to find an answer to your question you could always look it up. I included a couple links, the first is just a simple Wikipedia page, the Second is a video playlist of some very simple concepts of how the monetary system works.

The fixed exchange rate and convertibility into gold ended with Nixon. The reason is the US dollar is considered most stable. They world has more faith in it than anything else.

On the bill it's added to the subtotal. After that you get the real price. So ya it's right when you purchase it.

So just saw this from GP540's thread:

    8. Price!!!! (399-499 2yr term cad 799-899 mtm possibly 950 on shopbb)
$949 on ShopBB... I don't get it. Why would any sane person buy it on ShopBB then, considering buying it outright at the carrier is cheaper even after paying for the full unlock?

Do you have the price+tax indicated in the product aswell along the price without tax? or do you have to do the maths yourself?

So if you are tight on the money, it's better to do the maths before go pay right?

Only buying booze in Ontario is final price quoted but that's because the bankrupt Ontario government don't want its citizens to know all of the other tax hikes they put on booze which is a total of about 25%. Virtually all other products simply state $12.34+tax

They will need to be creative, for sure. I can't see them getting income any other way that these sneaky little tax grabs. They have done all they can with corporate, individual and consumptive taxes, and they must be wringing their hands. This years budget included about 12 billion to service the debt. The budget was 8B over income, so they borrowed the difference> Holy cr@p, if I did that, I'd go to the wall.

Didn't they do that for some time during early days of BB10 for folks with legacy BBOS handsets? They might just do it again although the chance is smaller for that to happen because this is a trial handset to test the waters, unlike BB10 where they bet the farm on.
