I always thought that my Q10 had just the right size and design for a pkb. How does the Priv pkb compare, is the Priv's as small and difficult as some early reviewers claim?

I owned a Q10 and the keyboard was personally much too small for me so I moved into a Z30 and just ditched the entire PKB. That said, I used the Priv keyboard yesterday and would consider their keyboards roughly the same size.

So, if you like the Q10 keyboard you'll probably like the Priv.

I just switched from a Q10 to the Priv. Having a much tougher time typing on the Priv than the Q10 so far. Just a very different feel to the keyboard. I'm sure I'll adjust. The spacing is very similar.

Keys seem smaller and not as easy to "feel" without the frets. I only tried for a few minutes at ATT but like the early sliders the key travel feels a little shallow. Probably easy to adapt to but nothing like a Classic or PP.

It looks small at first but after using it for a while it's great.

For what it is worth, a colleague told me the keys are very different. Keep in mind I have not touched them. I was told, the keys are smaller, the lip on the chin of the slider interferes, no frets, the keys do not have as pronounced a shape, etc. Overall impression was not designed as a pure stand alone PKB.

Note these are his impressions: he like me is a long time user of PKB and now the Q.

Priv keyboard is wider than the Q10. It's actually as wide as the Classic. Maybe its the shape, of the phone being so thin that gives the impressions that it's smaller.

This is the measurements I with a ruller.
    Q10 keyboard is 6.4cm wide
Priv keyboard is 6.9 cm wide
    Blackberry Classic is 6.9cm
    Passport keyboard is 8.2cm

If you're basing it off from the width of the phone, it's not a good comparison because the Q10 keys are edge to edge, but the Priv keys have maybe 0.5cm on either side. (based off what I can remember from playing with the phone in store.)

OP, I would suggest finding a demo phone in store. No one can describe how it feels.

I think this is precise (checked with my Passport SE, it's 8.1 cm).

Since many people says that Classic's keyboard is the most properly sized, I think the next version of Passport must be redesigned completely to contain 12 keys per row, for example:

Makes perfect sense. To have a keyboard as robust as Q10 or Classic would sacrifice the thinness of the device. I use a Q10 and Z30 and would be quite pleased if it feels the same or slightly different from the Q.

That's an ugly mess. The BB one on all devices but the Pearl and Passport is the best design.

I did not. I just measured the keyboard not the device. The priv is wider than the Classic, but the keyboard is not

I haven't had a BB with pkb since the Torch. Priv felt instantly comfortable and I found myself using qwerty typing again within minutes something i could never do on a vkb - Z10, Z30 or iphone. It just felt right. It's a good keyboard size.

By way of comparison I never felt comfortable typing on someone else's passport.

Nope. The Passport lacks many keys to host a complete non-English keyboard, which render it less competitive to VKB phones everywhere except English-speaking countries.

This new layout is compatible with Classic layout and computer keyboard as well, so it can be easy to use for both existing PKB users and [huge number of] potential PKB users who have never used PKB.

The Q10 has a larger button layout than the Priv. To me, the best comparison is the 9800 or 9810 keyboard style and feel.

You can't based the keyboard size to the width of each phone. The Priv has smaller individual keys and more connected to each other. Just press the letter G down and you will see the F and H go down with it. The feedback of each key is almost non-existent. Instead of pressing with fingertips, you are pressing with the base of your thumbs. The keyboard may be closer to the Classic's width 'size' but the actual keys feel more like the 9800/9810.
