    Interesting tidbits:

There won't be a launch event.

"Over the coming weeks, BlackBerry will unveil a marketing campaign it says forgoes the traditional launch event in favour of spending on advertising throughout the crucial holiday shopping season."

Pre-orders much better than latest devices.

"While Beard wouldn't provide presales figures, he said advance orders for the Priv have been "much" better than the Passport, Classic and Leap devices."

I don't care if they post a short note on their website.... just lift the NDA and let the reviews come.

And yet people are STILL saying BB10 is not the problem.

Although it is still early, BlackBerry maybe on to something...

I think most underestimated the reason behind the launch of the Priv.. for sure they will alienate their hardcore fan base since they will they say this is not a true BlackBerry etc. But obviously this was a pure business decision, they are not catering to their current bb10 users to necessarily upgrade to the Priv (some like myself will do). They are going after all those 'previous' blackberry users that moved to Android/ios but mostly android due to the lack of apps. Most of them really miss the keyboard, battery life, etc. And they will gladly come back to blackberry... this is just the beginning, at least I hope so. Once they can get enough sales I don't see why they wouldn't continue further developing the BB10 platform. It's just that now they can't afford investing in bb10 hardware if clearly - no matter how great they are- they are just not selling...

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't BlackBerry say that the Passport and Classic sales were going well in the beginning?

All those devices bombed so I'm not sure that is a high bar to pass...

The other thing is - Beard puts to bed the idea that some are still trying to pass off that this is phone intended for enterprises as the primary audience - unless you think CIOs are using targets during the christmas holiday to come up with device strategies.

That consumer-focus concerns me, because I'm not sure how many consumers will pay a premium for security and a keyboard.

You'd be surprised; a friend of mine in govt. has had the Priv recommended to him by their IT security folks. They have been having problems with some aspects of using older BlackBerry phones and a few of them went to Galaxy phones (hated them).
A lot of people I know would really like a large screen and a real keyboard again. It's an easy transition from other Android phones to the Priv. The Apple users might be tempted by the keyboard, but the newest Apple iOS and retail store support is pretty compelling for most 4S/5S/6S users.

...their version of 'selling well' is always off in the future but oddly never shows up in quarterly earnings?

Think about most phone companies now days...they only one the really does a true launch even is Apple...and this year it wasn't for just a phone, it was more of a company road map for the next year. I am much happier to see BlackBerry spend the money to actually market the device rather than hold a launch even for 1 phone.

In the last six weeks alone, Microsoft did a launch event and HTC did one and there were the motorola events (although HTC's was maybe the worst I'd ever seen). Even if its not a bit thing I cannot think of any of the major players who do not at least have an event with the press.

It has been said that the major migration of former BlackBerry users was not to Android but to iOS (iPhone). Speaking from personal experience this makes a lot of sense. iOS/iPhone combo provides a significant amount of security and privacy controls and measures that simply do not exist on Android. A BlackBerry user who is security conscious is therefore likely to go after Apple's offering, not Google's. Further to this, flagship BlackBerry devices were always seen as premium, and only Apple today offers (somewhat debatable) premium devices.

But in all honesty, what purpose would the launch party serve? There's media buzz already. Press release are already rolling out gradually, starting with Hong Kong this morning. People who want it already know it.

What buzz? At this stage the LG G4 is considered a bit of a failure in sales terms for LG and has been out for six (?) months.
