again i didn't think it was that bad, it is more white on grey, and i think that ad is not destined to be posted on a huge billboard...but it could be better for sure.

Beating a dead horse here, but I think using ONLY these poorly styled 'privacy' images is not too smart on BB's part. While the devices' privacy features / capabilities will certainly offer some appeal to some people, right-or-wrong there is a LARGE hunk of the user community that simply doesn't prioritize privacy features when shopping for a device. Hell, if you are going to sell your privacy features, then you prob should explain how bad 'normal' smartphones are, and why this device is (so much) better. Strange B&W pics of people kinda hiding behind the device is odd an odd and obscure message.
I get they're trying to create an impression & image for the device, but this does look like a very amateurish marketing execution that doesn't hit on the general public's 'wants' in a device.
Interestingly the only other 'marketing' they've sent out is that short little video segment of the PRIV in action. And that video doesn't touch on privacy features at all. But (fortunately) it does demonstrate some of the unique features of the phone.
Sorry, but you can reasonably predict marketing reception thru focus group data. I doubt that any kind of study or demographic data was used for this campaign. It is way too disorganized.
The "shower ad" is the easily the worst of these images with the silhouette holding the phone like a zombie dying against glass.
Look at my user name. I build haunted house props and train actors for a hobby. Right now there is an electric chair with a thrashing man, a hangman that kicks from his noose, & a puking zombie in my front yard. I find these Priv ads to be creepy and off putting. When I find something to be creepy in a bad way, that's a problem.
You're right about the need to show what this phone does. It's different & looks to have a good user experience. They need to highlight these facts and show the unwashed masses why they should consider buying a BlackBerry.
They're not selling an exclusive product. It's Android, there is lots of competition in the high end market. They need to stop the abstract bs & actually show the phone in a manner that will make people want to try BlackBerry again.

Well, if they would check the internet/blogs/social media that they are relying on so heavily for this marketing, they would see that it is being received somewhat poorly. As it stands, it seems they are ignoring it and forging ahead with these vague adds that leave themselves open to even more ridicule.
I agree on the second point you made. They need to do a waaaaaaaaaay better job of making people aware of the features of the phone. Leaving things to the imagination is not a good idea when your brand name is so tarnished in the public eye...

Thinking the exact same thing lol.
But really.....wtf!?

Honestly, after looking at the first ad with the creepy shower person, the two newer ones are definitely a vast improvement!

Oh they did.

who's to say that BB didn't have a focus group? or is not taking the feedback from blogs etc. the reason i said marketing is no easy task is because there were hundreds of ads that simply failed and i am sure there were focus groups for those before they were released. Focus groups are small groups generally, it is basically a sample of the population you're trying to market to, but they're not reflective of the whole population.
now that i know which shower ad people are referring to, yes it is obscure, but i didnt think it was that creepy. i didn't see blood in there.
my concern is that BB is still focusing on the privacy aspect, whi is okay for now, but it just needs to do much more. i suspect (hope) that we will see other ads that showcase what the Priv can do and offer in addition to the acquired privacy.
A quick Google search ( BlackBerry Marketing) finds numerous articles detailing Blackberry's various marketing fails, so this seems par for the course?
You also find that BlackBerry used a company named Gyro for pushing the Passport last year.
If you look at their website at www.gyro.com , it shares a similar style in presentation as these Priv ads. I have to wonder if it's the same shop again.

I'm not saying that they didn't use a focus group, but I find it highly unlikely. It's a cost cutting measure. There are companies that release ads without testing. They think they have a home run & don't bother paying the extra expense of testing.
Even with a bad Ad, you can usually tell what the company was going for. I'm still trying to figure out what the hell BlackBerry is trying to convey in these images.
Your concerns are my concerns as well. If BlackBerry wants this thing to suceed, they need to change the messaging. The bug droid pics are a good start. Showing the phones capabilities would be better.

Bingo! : )
it's probably the same company, i can see the style, but again i hope they can expand and show a more joyful image.
When you click on these ads do they take you to BlackBerry's website with more details on the Priv? If so, then I think they are good clickbait. That's the whole point. You see the ad and say, hmmm... what is that. Click! and then learn about the phone. If the ads don't lead to the site, then yeah. They are kind of a waste. They don't really say much about the phone.
I'm sorry you posted that. I have just spent 10 minutes on their site, and am wondering how I can get that 10 minutes back.
I am suspecting the hardware team is also in charge of the marketing to make sure they meet sales target... your efforts are having diminishing return.

try to put it on a projector or a print that has low dinamic range... those letters just blend in the background.
Damn! I was hoping that it was all a dream! :(
To tell you the truth I think they should have continued that murder in the woods ad. Like Michael Meyers with a Priv. Just keep making it creepier and creepier until it makes news.
Maybe some blood spatter where it's all black and white but the blood is red.
Feature the Priv on a smooth... hissing.... snake!

Maybe we should flood their FB page with requests of more joyful ads?
Who are they targeting with these images? People stuck in the 1920's?

I like these very much!
I love what this company says their results were, regarding the BlackBerry Passport campaign ...
"BlackBerry Passport sold 200,000 units in the first two days. Analysts have suddenly become bullish on BlackBerry. And the business world was successfully reintroduced to the mobile device they love."
I love these ads! So weird that it gets people talking
Well done here BlackBerry

That looks like the intro to Will & Grace...

although i don't completely agree with their strategy for the PRIV (if they are the ones responsible for it), the results for the passport are a different story. that phone regardless how good it is, it was imply designed for a very small niche market, it wasn't designed for the average consumer.
The PRIV should be a different story.
It's not my style. Personally don't like it. But considering the price tag on this baby, it makes since to do an ad that makes you think of prada or gucci. I've made a pretty successful career in sales and marketing and IMHO this is a good move.
