I downloaded the new marshmalow upgrade, it tells me that it's shutting down and then it freezes. Is this normal? How long do you need to leave it in "shutting down" mode?

I've had to leave it up to 20 minutes on the charger before on major Android upgrades.
Do NOT mess the upgrade process! It took quite a while for my phone to finish its upgrade! Once the OS has updated, along with the apps, I would do a hard reset. That should get everything working together fine and dandy.
My question mainly is if the SHUTTING DOWN is normal to take that long? In your experience after downloading and it says that it will restart, how long took it to reboot?

Yes, it's normal. Don't touch it. Let it do its thing!
Thanks. Downloading it now a third time.

Yep. Leave it alone!

It will say "shutting down" for 15-25 minutes. DON'T touch your phone until complete except to plug in if needed
Priv owner since Nov 6th 2015
Thanks. Went for a nap and came back to my great phone which actually has decent battery life. I hated this phone so much just for the battery life.

So let's say I rebooted it without knowing while it was shutting down forever.. How can I restart the installation process? I tried searching for updates in the system settings but the phone says up to date.. Is there anywhere I can access the MM download and run it from there?

Ditto here. I downloaded MM, then it seemed to get stuck so I rebooted. Now my Priv shows version Android 5.1.1 and that it is up-to-date. How to restart the process or finish what was truncated in mid-stream?
Same here guys. Exactly like you said. Was stuck on shutting down so I powered down. Now still shows 5.1.1.
Tmobile and BlackBerry were no help.
How do we push the update to the phone again?

No promises but this is from another thread:
"I had this problem and resolved it by clearing the data in Google Services Framework.
Go to Settings, Apps, All, click Google Services Framework, then click Clear Data."
BB Support guy said they'd had more than a few folks suffer our fate and they will re-ping the MM update in another day or so to folks who purchased Privs directly. I'm no techie, but the guy explained that the technology can discern whether the native Priv is still running 5.1.1 and if that is the case, the MM update will drop into the notifications for downloading. When I asked if there was a BB site where we could go "get" the MM download, he said no.
He took the serial number for my phone and said he would try to get a direct sniper shot of the MM pushed into my phone, but said not to expect it before morning, even if it was successful.
I can confirm this worked for me. I found it under all apps. Cleared cache first, then cleared data and reboot. Once booted I got the MM notification again and let the installation run.
Took about 25 minutes for me.

Yup, this is what worked for me. You need to send a bug report before clearing cache.

F2, you nailed it. What you saw and grontzz and akraus88 successfully used is now Knowledge Base KB38162. Even with my BB Support pal, AJ, and the KB 38162, it took 90 minutes from start to finish and at one point I think I could have fried an egg on the back of my Priv. But all is well now and MM is a big step forward, though I cannot forsee the Android platform ever achieving the operative elegance of the BB OS10. I just hope they keep feeding Priv bits and bits of some of the OS10 features over time.
I'm actually sorry that I don't recall which thread and who posted that solution. I did not originate it. I parroted it.
My mysterious powers comes from a text file, actually text FILES, I have on my desktop. I grab snippets from posts that seem to answer questions that I might have or that others might have. Unfortunately, I do not do attribution but "steal" others contributions. I have such files for the BB Playbook, the Z10/Z30 and now the Priv. It is a totally disorganized file. I just add stuff to the end. Ctrl-F can generally find stuff in those files.
Glad it helps.
