being out of stock doesnt mean anything unless we know how many they had in the first place...

That wouldn't be a cake then. Oh well, subtract 20 points off its overall score regardless.

Considering that the need to sell 5 million to have a business, and that they're selling 800k BB10 units a quarter, it shouldn't have been difficult to commit to 1M at launch. If they sell out quickly, at least BlackBerry has a great press release. If they don't, BlackBerry can pretty confidently sell through that level of inventory eventually. If they can't sell 1M units, they will be taking a huge charge to dismantle hardware anyway.

If they only built a few units and are losing sales at launch for lack of inventory, they made a very grave error and may have doomed themselves.

I'm guessing what they're saying and what they're doing are two completely different things. What they're saying is to keep people's faith in the brand, but possibly what they actually need is much less than that. So they simply supplied enough to keep the business going, and any extra both increased demand and added bonus to their quarterly earnings.

Reminds me of the line I waited in for the PS3.

I think some of the early stock of unlocked phones may have been purchased by resellers. You can find htem in various places online at a huge markup. However, my local AT&T stores all show in-stock right now.
