Last year, when I bought my Passport, ShopBlackberry had this silly price-cutting act on. You see, when the passport was released, it said that it was actually $750 USD. However, that price was slashed and it was shown to be discounted to $650 USD. This was, in reality, the actual price of the device. Never did it go over that price. They only placed that higher price next to it because they wanted the casual passerby to think there was a real price cut happening. My thought is that the price we saw when those links were active were a mistake caused by input fields. Let's say that some data entry person was told to type two prices into the page. One price would be the one we saw. The other would be the one that would reflect the "discount". However, since the page wasn't even supposed to be posted anyways, we saw the original price before the "discount" price was entered. Not particularly confident in this explanation but I just realized how easily it could happen.

    What do you all think?

I think that's an incredibly optimistic perspective and I hope you are right

I don't know about the mechanics of how they make their pages, but I could totally see something like "MSRP is $750, but buy now you get an instant $100 rebate"

    I hope.

Isn't the listed price of literally everything a result of something that some data entry person typed in?

That's actually what I was thinking too. But that's also pretty sleazy marketing, artificially inflating the price and then offering a "discount" back to regular price.

BlackBerry is setting themselves up to ruin this product launch...if there will ever be a launch.

If prices are what they were shown as I think they will be slashed a few weeks after launch. Once the early adopters buy the reality of competition will set in.

That's kind of disrespectful to used-car salesman IMHO!

But this is entirely normal now-a-days. Hence the "20% OFF" crap. Gone are the days when a manufacturer would cut off supply if a retailer sold for less than the price determined by the manufacturer (e.g. Omega watches who protected small jewelry stores vs the big boys). The MSRP/SRP are just marketing ploys designed to confuse consumers.

Imo, there's a difference between saying it's $750 with a $100 rebate than there is with it's $949 with a $100 rebate. $750 is still a relatively modest price and another $100 off would make you go wow awesome deal. $949...yea not so much.

    In Canada at least.

My thought process for the Priv, including ShopBB discount for the unlocked one:

599 CAD - Shut up and take my money yesterday
699 CAD - It's pricey but for PKBs, it's worth it
799 CAD - I'll wait, my Classic still works
    949 CAD - That's it, I'm outta here.

That is 100% wrong. If they do that they will be charged for false advertising. A company I worked for was charged for that advertising a sale when it was regular price. The passport sold for a day at the higher price. After the first day the price was dropped.
