It certainly wasn't marketed extensively and most people did not understand that BlackBerry had a new OS. Most people also did not know that data was no longer compressed and no longer needed BIS. Even on the Android forums there's queries about whether the Priv uses BIS or not and with the announcement of the Priv on FB by CPW, there's too many people saying "I thought BlackBerry went bust". Also very little in store presence.
There's little point in me Googling Z10/BB10 and providing links to all the press reports, because you wouldn't be convinced. "BB10 failed because of the poor marketing" has become a touchstone on CB, and as Joseph Heller (nearly) said: "truth is whatever people believe".

I'm half-tempted to spend that time, because that google search would show extensive press coverage. I think the Q10 launch even made it to the front-page (online edition) of the Telegraph. The Q10 launch at Selfridges became a very positive puff-piece (in the Guardian IIRC), and Z10's and Q10's were heavily promoted in carrier adverts. The Z10 launch was "big" across all of the papers, and was positively reported in a "BlackBerry is BACK!" way. Search and ye shall find. Me... I'm playing my guitar.

Across the pond, it was a similar story. PantlessPenguin has posted (several times, to little effect apparently ), her photographs of significant in-store marketing and advertising.

I'll admit that by the time the Z30 was snuck-out during some minor Malaysian event, the buzz was fading. But, by that time, even BB must have known BB10 wasn't going anywhere. I guess they lost heart.

So, I'll just get back to my guitar, and we'll agree to disagree I think.

I don't disagree with this, you're right in what you've just said, but it was nothing compared to the coverage being given to the competition and the amount of advertising was very small in comparison to them. Significantly large in comparison to BlackBerry's previous efforts, yes. It didn't help that 10.0 was a three legged horse at a greyhound race. They fixed it quick enough, but not before a TON of early adopters had already returned their phones and made it their mission to bad mouth BlackBerry to all and sundry. The ad campaigns we're short lived and had little long term penetration. Hence the continued ignorance regarding BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry in general. The point that BlackBerry 10 was different to os7 was not rammed home repeatedly and it really needed to be to repair the damage caused by the 8520.

I don't think BlackBerry 10 failed due to poor marketing however. I just disagree with your assertion that that there was enough of it.

    Enjoy your Guitar.

BB10 was advertised here in the US within the money that BlackBerry had at time in the budget. The company spent and lost great amounts of cash developing BB10. The company underestimated how far Android/IOS would develop their full ecosystems. BlackBerry was so far behind with apps that cash bounties were offered to develop or port apps over from Android. They initially spent marketing dollars however from day 1 they realized BB10 would be a failure because of returns by first time smartphone buyers that couldn't find popular apps. You can't sell people something they don't want. They spent cash so fast that company almost failed 10 months later.

"You have a right to your privacy which you may or may not attach importance to. What is not acceptable is for another person or persons with no more rights than you, to devise ways of snooping through your stuff. I take it you wouldn't consider doing it to someone else? I thought not. So why is not a big deal when someone does it to you? Are you not the equal of any of these people in the eyes of the law? People have fought all across the world for equal rights. People of different colours, creeds, sexual orientation, gender and different appearance.

When a person or a corporation decides it has the 'right' to invade your privacy and you don't have the 'right' to do the same to them, the concept of equality goes straight out the window and where I come from, that's frowned upon.

Then they sell whatever they find to the highest bidder! WTF!

They get away with it simply because of the EULA. When you hit the ' I agree' button without reading the damn thing, you're basically giving away whatever they want you to. They make it so wordy that you don't want to read it anyway and you just hit that button every time.

I think it should be made illegal for any organisation to be allowed to even ask you to give up any of your rights without a very good reason. And 'coz we wanna sell stuff' or 'we wanna sell people's private info' is not a good reason at all in my opinion.

Or you could just accept it, and accept the fact that you are not equal and that you are no longer a private citizen.

    Your call."

Yes, I understand the right to privacy that we all have.

My point, is that if i *choose* to use a device that I *suspect* will farm my data, that is my choice. If said device provides ads that the great engine in the sky thinks I may find interest in, then OK! I don't do anything critical on my mobile device, and carefully guard my info on other media. And for the record, who knows whether the info I make available is actually valid, or if I am purposely skewing the results?

See that's the thing, I don't dislike either. They both have their strengths and weaknesses. I like to keep an open mind when trying stuff like operating systems.

Hell I've even eager to try that new lumia phone running Windows 10

When I went from a palm pre to an HTC evo, I didn't start criticizing what it lacked compared to webos.. I mean I have it some time and found that I liked it, even thought it didn't have certain features that my palm pre had.

Iets try this again.... What OS is installed on the Priv? Oh that's right, Android right? So it's not a blackberry anymore, it's a blackberry running and Android OS. Just like Samsung, Motorola, HTC, Sony, LG, and many other Manufacturers. When ya buy A Dell, Hp, Asus, and what ever brand ya like, it's still running Windows right. Windows 10 or 8 or 7. Still windows....

How stubborn can you be? OK say blackberry never released bb10? Say they switch straight to Android years ago, you're telling me those phones wouldn't be a blackberry?

Samsung phones are still Samsung, HTC phones are still HTC, etc.

    Is
the phone running bb10? No it's not, but it's still a blackberry. This phone was designed by blackberry, it was announced by blackberry, it was showed off by blackberry, thus making it a blackberry, what is so hard to understand.

What are you going to tell people when you buy this phone and see that big blackberry logo in the back and blackberry lettering in the front.

Co worker: hey jimmy that's an awesome looking blackberry

You: NO! Its not a blackberry!!

Coworker: but it says blackberry on the front of th

    You:NO! I told you it's not a blackberry!!

Coworker: alright relax man... So what is it?..

    You: its a blackberry

Coworkerh so it is a blackb

    You:YOU DIDN'T LET ME FINISH!

    Coworker:........

You: ifs a blackberry... Running Android.

The very reason BlackBerry failed in india especially was coz of BIS..ppl dint want to pay so much extra just to make BBM work..and not many people were sending mails day n night..people still ask me if im paying extra for internet (BIS)..and then nobody knows about BlackBerry 10 here in india..no ads no marketing..nothing..u actually have to look for shops who can order a BlackBerry device for u..since no stores really keep them

Chen has previously stated that the BB Hub etc will come to Android, iOS and even WinPhone (though I'll believe WinPhone when it happens )

At the moment it will be a Priv exclusive.

I take your point though. CB is a forum for anyone interested in BB, or at least it should be!

Yeah it was - TV adverts, newspaper campaigns, 02 made it a hero device, POS gear, incentives for staff - the Z10 was extensively marketed in the UK.

you're linking what i said to Marxian socialism? ok...... let me rephrase so it's not so extreme in your eyes.

it wasn't marketed in the biggest market, USA. the total opposite of what you said happened here. people don't think BBRY even exists- when they see my Z30 they're dumbfounded. doesn't matter now though.
OK so why did it flop in markets where it *was*?

(not sure where Marxist socialism comes into the post you quoted???? - the term revisionist isn't particularly associated with Marx)

I agree it was marketed. But not extensively. I saw one or two TV ads for a very short period. Newspaper readership is not what it once was and all the point of sale gear in the world doesn't make a difference when the guy behind the counter is telling you that you'd be better off with an iPhone. Add to that the staggering no of returns due to battery life, app gap and incomplete os at launch and well, you know the rest. They should have made sure the product was ready and then marketed like crazy. And for longer. It wasn't advertised very well prior to launch either so not much of a frenzy was whipped up for it. The 8520 did a whole lot of damage to brand perception too. It was the number one best selling smartphone for Christmas 2012 in the UK due to it's price of 99. That meant a large amount of people realising that an "app gap" even existed and wondering why their phones we're so slow compared to their mates.
